Anyone Write Their Own Job Description?

I've got the opportunity to write the job description for a new position being created here that I am being earmarked for. Big Smile What should I take into consideration?

Also, tips on negotiating would be great, since I historically stink at that.

Re: Anyone Write Their Own Job Description?

  • Will the position be competed?  If so, I would put in very specific things,  hopefully very specialized, that few know how to do, except of course you.

If you think $ is going to be tough to get out of them, consider negoitating additional vacation time, things like that do don't cost them cash.

  • if you are giving a $$ amount, shoot high. even if they come down, it's still a win for you. ditto everything Mrs.Habious  said. negotiating things that don't cost money is always good - in addition to vaca days, maybe a more flexible schedule (like every other friday off or summer hours)?

you will do great! good luck!

I don't think the position is going to be competed, which is great. I just get to write my own job description and say, "This is what I'll be doing." Which is pretty amazing.

More vacation time will never happen, because we already get a ton. I've also got like 14 weeks of leave available to me, so they'd probably look at me like I had three heads if I asked for more. I would like to negotiate a work from home day, though.

A high level person in here is going to advocate for a big raise for me, and also agreed to sit down with me and work with me on negotiating. She's been successful in getting large raises for people in the past, so fingers crossed.

  • sounds like you're doing all the right things and yay for not needing more vaca time! GOOD LUCK!!

    Surprise

As someone who's in the negative with leave and is DYING for a day off, that's all I can muster. lol.

No actual advice, but good luck!

  • I would include a list of skills, education, and experience which specifically outlines what the requirements would be for the position. This will help in showing why others aren't qualified and to justify your salary and any other requests. For example, what degrees should the person have, how many years of experience in the field/industry, area there any specific technical systems, procedures, laws, etc. in which they need to be familiar with. Good luck!
