How do you play your iPhone in the car?

My car is old and there isn't an audio jack. So I've been using the Monster FM transmitter, but it doesn't work so well anymore. I've bought several other kinds to try, but none are all that great either, although I'm scared to spend a lot because I don't know if it will work, so then I buy cheap ones which is probably part of why they don't work. Holy run on sentence!

What works for you?

Re: How do you play your iPhone in the car?

  • Sorry, I'm no help.  My car has a spot to plug in a connector so I just use that.

  • I had something installed that goes into a jack on the back of my car's stereo, so now a cord snakes out from under my dash so I can plug it into my iPhone and play music. It works great. I don't remember what it's called -- but if you go somewhere like Best Buy's car audio section and describe this setup, they should know what to do. They sell the cord in the store and will install it for you.

This is the best route I think (and what DH did in his car) if your car isn't already set up for it.  I have a USB port in my car so I just use the regular cord that comes with an iphone/ipod.

Argggg! That's what I was afraid of! ::whines:: how much does that cost?
  • Shouldn't be too bad, I don't think the cord is that expensive.  DH even installed his himself.

  • do you happen to have a tape player in your car?  if so, you can get the old school tape that has a cord coming out that plugs into the headphone jack and play it that way.  That's how we did it with DH's VW passat.  the FM transmitter sucks in Austin because we have too many stations so there aren't any that are completely free of transmission.

other than the tape player or FM transmitter, you're going to have to get something installed  Sad

I do that a lot now. I'm sure it's toootally legal. And super safe. (insert embarrassed emoticon)
  • DH is kind of a techy guy so I asked him.  His response was:

FM trasnmitters only work when they can find a vacant frequency IE static however living in a metro area most are taken up so they will be ineffective. For about $20 for a harness and $100 for the radio you can install a new radio that has a audio jack out.
