As many of you know I teach high school here in Austin. One of my students has a rare type of lupus and it has started to attack vItal organs. She goes through chemo for 4 days every month. Yet, she still excels in my class. She's an amazing young lady. Anyway, I've noticed the past two weeks she's been going down hill. Very tired, and looks like every movement is extremely painful. Yesterday she had a bad reaction to her chemo :-( she's going to be out a while longer. She's at Dell children's and not looking good.
So I found out that this morning. And then...
I have another student who is always at the top of the class, polite, helps others, helps me and is over all a great kid. Turns out his family became homeless last week and he's been living in a car with his mom and 5 brothers and sisters. He also works 20 hours a week at mcdonalds.
I just don't get it. I have kids that come to school and can't give me the time of day cause they're too busy with their iPhone 4 or daddy doesnt give them a car. Those kids are constantly failing and have an attitude despite having blessings.
Then I have kids like the two above. It breaks my heart. I need a drink.

Re: Rough day
Yes, that process started today. Apparently one of his little brothers told his teacher, otherwise we would have no idea. He of course is embarassed and doesn't want anyone to know, but the school social worker is helping the family to find some sort of affordable housing. They're hoping that no matter where in the area the housing is, we can let them all stay at their current schools throughout the end of the year.
((hugs)) I'm so sorry. I totally understand your feelings.
One of the things that I find to be the hardest about teaching (I teach hs, too) is the information that the kids share with me. I'm glad they feel like they can talk to me but it's so hard for me to hear the things they're going through. I can't just leave it at work, ya know? It's like a huge weight on me all the time because I know they don't deserve it but what can I do?
Your students are very lucky to have someone who cares about them so much. AISD is doing them a serious disservice by not keeping you around.
