I don't mean in construction zones along the highways, but on regular city/county roads. I've started noticing them more and more now, and I don't like it! I got a ticket in DC coming home from work; I was probably going 40 in a 25 (haven't gotten the ticket yet but I was flashed so it's on its way...) but I didn't even see a sign or anything indicating there were cameras there (the next time I drove there though, I did see a small sign).
I think it's ridiculous. I hate slowing down to 30 (which, by the way, seems soooo slow to me) and then picking right back up to 40 as soon as I'm safely out of the camera's sight. I don't think it makes people speed less; they just slow down until they pass the camera.
Thoughts?
Re: What do you think of speed cameras?
I understand why municipalities are moving towards them. They cost less than having a manned speed trap set up and provide a decent revenue stream. I think that if you are going 10 mph over the speed limit you should expect to get a ticket.
Speeding on low MPH roads is dangerous and it's stupid/wasteful depending on how far you are going. The people who fly down our road at 50 mph get to the stop light 20 seconds earlier than someone going the speed limit.
I wish there was camera in front of my house... we live on a non-major, purely residential road (it's no outlet- dead ends into a gated community) 30 mph- our home is less than 100 yds from a speed bump, which I swear just makes people slow down and then speed up after. People have been clocked going over 50 mph in front of our home & our it's infuriating.
I am all for them. As long as they put signs up telling you "Speed Cameras in Use".
I don't really speed, its not worth it to me. I pretty much go with the flow of traffic, although on the way to work sometimes I guess technically everyone could be pulled over since we are all going over the limit. I think if you do speed then getting a ticket is a consequence you should have to deal with. (Not you, pp, just a general you).
I know people b!tch about them only being there as a source of revenue, but in this day and age of budget cuts and with police and fire departments dealing with reduced funding and staffing, I say bring it.
I wish they would put up more red light cameras to catch the fvckers who run red lights. And I hate to post and run, but I am off to target, and then to get an ultrasound
They used to really bother me, but not anymore. If I'm going over the speed limit, then I'm breaking the law. If I get caught--by police or speed camera--it's my own fault for going over the limit anyway.
This is not to say that I don't speed at all, ever. On highways, I usually go with the flow of traffic or about 5 over. On low speed limit areas (ie, schools, residential areas) I never speed--it's just too dangerous. I'm not taking a chance that a child might run out in front of me or something.

Why would you expect them to put up signs saying that Speed Cameras are in use? There aren't signs warning you about speed traps or officers in the area. I'm a lead-foot and I can't rightfully complain about them. If I get busted, it's my own dumb damn fault for breaking the law. I really don't understand how people can be against them.
I agree with this. I don't speed more than 5-10mph over the limit usually but if I get caught, it's my own fault.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I speed way more than I should, and if I got a ticket, it would be my fault for speeding.
I agree with all of what luckii said. Especially the last bolded sentence.
This, although (contrary to what DH says) I am not a leadfoot. I go with traffic or 5 to 10 mph over.
I dunno, I guess I feel like if I want to go 40 instead of 30, and I feel safe doing that, then why can't I? I'm sort of anti-speed limit anyway, I suppose. I don't speed because I'm late or in a hurry (usually...), I just like driving a bit fast. I don't speed in residential areas or school zones, and I don't drive fast in bad weather.
It just seems sneaky to me, and I don't think they're very effective. Like, now that I know that camera is there, I will slow down until I'm past it, then continue driving my usual speed. I guess they'll get money from people who don't know about it, but they aren't doing anything to change people's behavior.
Because it's not just about your safety, but the safety of others.
I drive over the speed limit, usually about 10mph when I'm on major roads, so I'm not judging - but it's really not up to you to say what's safe for an entire community. That's what the laws are for - the best interest of the community as a whole. You and I (and plenty of others) both break the law. If we get caught doing it, we deserve the ticket/citation/fine/whatever.
I am absolutely for them. If they have to catch speeders then I'd much rather them use cameras and use the cops where the real crime happens instead of putting so many cops on the highway and 2 miles down the road someone gets murdered.
And I agree with what others said .. if I speed it's my own fault if I get busted. I usually got about 10 over on Highways if traffic allows.
I think they are an easy source of revenue and they are trying to enforce a law that's already been passed - win-win (win)
This being said, I am somewhat of a lead foot and have gotten my share of speed camera tix (most on 295/BW pkwy in DC), but I'm clearly violating a law. I think putting up a sign to announce that you are enforcing a law is silly. I think they influence behavior to a certain extent, especially if you've gotten a ticket in a certain location before (for me, it has taken more than 1 ticket, but I'm getting better!), but it is better than nothing (and certainly better than points on my license!).
I have a lead foot, so I get these all the time. It's my own fault for speeding, and I know it.
The only thing that I hate about them is that I feel like they aren't placed where people speed and shouldn't, like near schools, parks, in residential areas, and instead are placed where they will get the most revenue. Obviously going above the speed limit is against the law everywhere, but it's less egregious to me to speed on a busy road with no houses or businesses as I get off the highway than in a residential/business area.
