So, I'm thinking of entering a contest

Weather.com is doing a $15,000 backyard make over contest.  Our backyard is AWFUL.  The deck is falling apart and the yard is muddy, lumpy, and gross.  Our yard totally looks WT.  Does anyone have any tips on essay writing for these kinds of things?  I know it's cheesy and probably unlikely, but I would be thrilled if we were able to win this.  With baby on the way we're not able to put any money into our yard/deck this year and it is BAD.  If I had a picture handy, I would post it, but I don't right now.  I'll probably go home and take a picture of it while the weather is crappy.  I think if it's dark and dreary out, it will really showcase just how ugly it really is Stick out tongue

  • Haha damn, now I wanna enter this!  My backyard is horrible too.  Good luck!  I would give you tips, but I'm horrible at writing essays :)
  • Haha.  Yeah, I haven't written an essay in like...10 years.  LOL.  And if I had a picture of our deck, you guys would seriously laugh.  It is really, really bad.  There's particle board on one side so the dog can't escape from the backyard, and the gate is made from old fence parts that fell down....yes, that means we're missing part of our privacy fence in the back (there's chain link the neighbors have up).  There's no grass in the  corners of the yard because the dog uses the outside of the yard as her racing track.  There's even a little bank turn in one corner where the dog has built up dirt by running so fast.  You bet, it's awesome.

  • WOP if you write an essay, let me know. I can proof read it and some of the other nesties will probably do the same too.

  • Yeah, I'll definitely have you ladies proof read my entry.

  • My best advice would be to keep it to the point and try not to ramble. Write your first draft, let it sit for a few hours or a day, and then re-read it and try to cut a few sentences or phrases. Do that a couple of times (at least that's what I would do, because I tend to write long) and the essay will be more to the point. Also, a little subtle humor never hurts. Try to let your personality show through as much as possible...something to prove you're a real person rather than a bot spitting out what you think they want to hear.

  • Maybe take the baby angle - a) you want a safe yard for the LO and b) a new backyard will be about creating new family memories. You have visions of your new little family spending time in the back yard, spending the summer evenings enjoying long summer nights.

  • Write down your list of reasons why you want this. Then use that as an outline for the essay.

And also, SELL your reasons! Make them see why you need-not want- this :)

This is a good idea. Good luck!!
