IUD experiences

Has anybody had a BAD experience with an IUD? I've always been on the pill, but want to get an IUD after having the babies, so I don't have to worry about it daily.  I'm going with the Paragard instead of Mirena because it can stay in longer.

Re: IUD experiences

  • I've had a few friends with bad experiences with Mirena, and the rest swear by it. I personally would go with a non-hormonal IUD like paraguard (I think that's what it is called).

The bad experiences were mostly difficulty w/ implant, and then one friend had weight gain and extensive cramping and mood swings the entire year it was in.

Yeah, that's why I want Paragard since it has no hormones.  My OB said lots of people get acne on Mirena. No thanks.

I see zero drawbacks to paragard, really.  You still get periods but that's no big deal to me.

  • I got paragard in December.  It's a love/hate relationship.  It causes a *much* heavier period and it draws it out a day or two longer so I hate that fact.  I had some spotting the first couple months, but that went away.  Supposedly the heavier periods should tame down, but I have yet to see that.  Other than that, I love not having to think about bc at all and not having to deal with hormones.

  • I had my 6 week checkup with my doctor yesterday and we went over BC options.  She suggested the IUD because of no hormones but I had two close friends have bad reactions to it.  One was allergic to the copper and had horrible horrible UTI's because of it.  The other had really bad rashes take over her whole body - they would move in patches around her body.

My doctor was surprised because she said she's never had a patient have a bad reaction on it but understood why I wanted no part of it seeing as two friend were part of that small %.

I have no desire to be back on BC ever again - I'm going to do the pull & pray along with possibly charting to avoid.  But I figure it took us forever to get pregnant with #1, if we have an "oops" before we're ready to start trying for #2 at least I don't have to go through the headache of failed cycles all over again.

I feel the same way. I think P&P is going to be our method too.

  • I love my Mirena.  I'm not sure we're completely done w/ babies, so having one that could stay in long wasn't an issue.  I haven't had a period, just some very minor spotting that barely requires a pantyliner.  I do break out occasionally, but it isn't too bad either.

I love not having to worry about a pill every day, and do not trust the p&p method.

If you get an IUD, take 3-4 Motrin beforehand, it can be a bit uncomfortable.

My OB told me this too.  It makes me want to take something more like a vicodin because last time an OB told to take a motrin before something (freezing my cervical cells for possible cervical cancer) I was crying on the way home because I was in so much pain.
