Yet another reason to go farm fresh
http://www.aolnews.com/2011/04/19/more-bad-news-for-meat-eaters-chicken-samples-contaminated/
The other day I was buying some local ground beef and I had taken my grandmother with. She remarked that I was over paying. DH chimed in and said we weren't buying anymore crap from the grocery store after I 'forced him to watch Food Inc'. When I started watching it he sat down and watched it willingly (without me asking) and now he bitches more then I do about recalls, ect.
Silly DH. He also wants us to start our own organic farm.

Re: Yet another reason to go farm fresh
My MIL makes the same ignorant comments. "You pay WHAT for chicken/beef/pork? I get it for 1/3 that much at XYZ store." She's actually proud of it! I really want to say "I don't judge you for eating factory farmed contaminated meat. So don't judge me for paying what it costs to raise healthy animals."
Double
My parents are the same way. We've just learned to not discuss prices any more. What makes me really happy is my little sister is pushing for my parents to start buying some of their food from the farms we get ours from. They can more than afford to, and I think she may succeed in her convincing this year
I get comments from my parents like this too. I just tell them that's its MY money that I'm spending, not theirs, so MYOB.
My dad and brothers hunt deer, and this weekend we are going to grind some deer meat for brats and burger. My parents have always mixed it with grocery store beef, and I chose to get local, humanely-raised, antibiotic and hormone free pork. My mom asked what I paid for it. When I said $3.10/pound, she freaked out and said "well we got all that beef for X dollars."
I'm happy with our choice not to be feeding DS hormone injected meat. Yes, I know it could be better and totally organic, but we don't really have any local options around here. I figure the meat I buy is still better quality than grocery store stuff, and it's worth it to know where and who is raising it!
