my brother just got a new job and found out he will be relocating to long island. I am trying to send him a cute package of all NY stuff. I have family so I know a bit about what to include...here is what I have so far:
yankee stuff (he is a HUGE fan) and won't look so weird anymore, he lives in chicago now
a kids book on new york
a bagel
black and white cookie
what else screams NY that would be cute to get in a package???
Re: New York Question
what a thoughtful idea!
there are some great wineries on LI:

or some brooklyn lager?
not everyone's thing but i know a lot of people who grew up in NY love this coffee soda: http://www.manhattanspecial.com/
will he be spending time in manhattan or the boroughs? either time out or new york magazine would be a great inclusion (not sure if you'll find time out in this area but new york mag should be in most bookstores)
i would probably skip the bagel and cookie since he will be able to get better bagels and b&w cookies there. how about magnets of them instead?
maybe print out a few of these: http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/ or buy the book?
Some other thoughts -
a copy or subsciption to Time Out NY (It will really get him in the swing of what to do)
Gift card to Zabars (if he's going to be in the city reguarly)
A copy of the Jones Beach summer concert calendar (free!)
If you want to be cute, something from Nathan's since it is widely available in local grocery stores (we LOVED going to the stand on Coney Island growing up)
A subway map (they make this little fold out ones that I found indispensable when I was learning the system
I think there is a book Weird Long Island that would be funny as well
Any tourist guide to the city would be useful
An I love NY shirt/hat/sticker
A LIRR travel schedule. (free!)
if he's not going into the city that much, maybe this magazine?
