3.5 and suddenly wetting the bed? ugh what gives?

So Ava has been potty trained for a year and a half (since right after her 2nd bday).. we ditched the over-night pull ups almost a year ago.. All the sudden in the last 2 weeks she has had 5-6 overnight accidents.. She always goes to the bathroom right before bed and she used to wake up in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom if she needed to. I try not to let her drink too much in the evenings..

So do I put her back in pull-ups? I mean that seems ridiculous but I can't keep stripping her bed and moving her to the guest room every night!   Do I take her to the pedi and make sure she doesn't have a UTI? (no accidents during the day ever)  Also, we have a "waterproof" mattress pad but its not doing its job.. her mattress was pretty wet last night.. what do I do to make sure it doesn't get mildewed and doesn't smell like urine?

  • I literally could have written this. Katen is Ms reliable but all of a sudden started having accidents at night too. I'm wondering the same thing as you. Back to pull ups? I think she ruined her mattress. She'll even go as far as to sleep right through only relizing she's wet much too late. ugh. I have zero ideas but wanted to let you know you're not alone.

  • Yeah the first couple times were like "tinkle" accidents.. like her panties and sheets would be damp but not soaked.. the last few times have been where her panties, shirt, comforter, sheets and even dripping to the floor..

Are you getting rid of her mattress? I know for sure that I will be getting a better mattress pad but I will be really upset if we have to get rid of her mattress..

  • Take Ava to the doctor to see if they can rule out infections and such. You want to get to the source of the problem as soon as possible in order to prevent it from getting worse.

Try waking her up in the middle of the night or get a timer that will do so.

As for the mattress, wash with warm/hot soapy water and let air dry. See if the hospital will give you a stack of the large rectangular waterproof pads. (You know - the kind that you'd lay over the birthing ball?) Use a few if she moves around a lot at night.

Yes we may very possibly have to get rid of it. I have a sensitive nose and it still smells.

This started when K did have a uti but now she seems fine and it's still happening. Frustration!!

  • OMG, we're having the same problem. Cohen was potty trained a little later than your girls, but he's been dry at night for months now. For the past few weeks he wets the bed almost every night. It seems like putting him in a Pull up would be enabling him, but like you said, it gets really old washing the bedding.

I guess it makes me feel a little better that we're not alone.

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
  • I know this might sound weird, but I would try using Nature's Miracle pet spray on the mattress.  We had an incident with our dog and a mattress and it took the smell and most of the stain right out!

  • Add us to the list too. In the last week Ella has had two overnight accidents after not having any for a very long time. I took away water at night. She usually has a small cup by her bed but we are doing away with that until she gets back on track. I also try to cut off any liquids an hour before bed.

She has also had two accidents where she makes it all the way to the potty but pees on the step stool instead of the potty because she doesn't get her underwear down in time. We are working on getting to the bathroom before she has to go that bad and I'm also trying to give her a bit of extra attention lately.

ETA: Ugh. Nest posted before I was ready. Anyway I just want to add that Ella has been acting out a lot when she is with me so I'm wondering if it isn't part of some sort of rebellion which is why I'm trying to give her extra attention.  I hope it is a phase that ends very soon.

  • Weird that all of our kids are doing it at the same time.. at first I thought maybe since she was playing outside more at school she was drinking more water but this week its been cold/rainy so that's not it.. I guess I'm glad to know we aren't alone!

  • So far so good for us, but it looks like I should start getting prepared for some nighttime accidents!

I would take her to the doc to rule out a UTI just to be safe.  The pp has a good suggestion for nature's miracle for the stain/smell.  I've used it on carpet with good results.
