Where do you bank?

and do they charge fees?  I went to Citizens this morning to open a bank acct for DD.  The woman informed me that starting in June, my money market acct will be charged $2/month because we don't have a checking account and don't have online banking with them.  DD's acct would have that $2/month fee as well.   She also said that most banks are going in this direction and that gone are the days of "free checking".

Is anyone else finding this issue at their banks?  Can you recommend a good bank that doesn't charge monthly fees just to have a place to hold your money?  DD's account is only going to have a little bit of money, so it is ridiculous to allow them to charge her fees on a few hundred bucks!

I am so frustrated!

Re: Where do you bank?

  • ooh that sucks. we bank at sovereign. we have our checking and 3 savings with them and none of them have fees.

  • There's the option of online banking. We use ING and they haven't jumped on the fee wagon yet.

  • i was going to suggest ING too. she can have a higher-yield savings as well (and switch money to/from savings very easily). when i am working again, i plan to switch from bank of america to ING. we've been meaning to close our BoA accounts for awhile but kept them for the convenience of locations in NY, DC, and MA. their fees are insane.

  • We bank at Washington Trust, and have no fees on any of our accounts.  2 checkings, 4 savings.
  • We had Citizens Accounts, but when we received the memo that they were going to start charging we (along with a lot of other long time customers) pulled our money out.

I also have a Sovereign Account that was set up a long time ago and I have since learned that they too charge fees now. However the ones that had accounts prior to the new fee process were "grandfathered in" so they won't receive a fee.

We now bank at Bank Of America. They also hold our Mortgage and Check and Savings accounts, NO FEE's Wink

Thanks Joanna, I got it and will take a look over the weekend hopefully.  So, dumb question, but do you have an ATM card for ING so you can withdraw money as you need it?  DD just wants a place to put her birthday and babysitting money, and will probably want to take out $$ for the movies, etc.
  • yes, i do have an ATM card for my checking with them. i've had a savings account with them since 2006 but they just started offering the checking account. they don't have many ATMs so they allow customers to bank at other ATMs all over the country but don't charge a fee at them. there's a list of approved banks/machines on their site.

  • Credit unions are a better bet; most don't charge fees.  We have our accts @ Pawtuckets Credit Union.  Their basic checking accts are free so long as you have direct deposit (DH & I both do) in your acct which is nice.  Here's their page with basic info on acct types:

Their customer service is great.  When I had some fraud on my acct they called me about it before I even noticed & I check my online accts almost daily!
