50th birthday party for my mom - need opinions!

So my siblings and I are throwing my mom a 50th birthday party next Friday night. Some how I ended up getting in charge of it...

My sister and I were talking about decoration. Do you do black and over the hill signs? I know for 40 you do, but I am not sure about 50... is there ettiquette for a 50th birthday party?

I am not sure my mom would be to happy about the black and over the hill stuff (I know I wouldn't for me) but I know that's just a feeling of getting old.

Thoughts, opinions? Thanks ladies!

  • I don't know about etiquette, but if you think there's even a possibility that you mom wouldn't be happy about it, then I wouldn't do it.  I'd stick to colors she likes.  Bright, springy colors would work, since (at least here) everyone is so tired of winter/cold at this point.

  • I agree, if you don't think your Mom will like it, I wouldn't do it.  Pick a couple pretty colors that she likes that go together well and go from there.  Some people are sensitive about the age thing while others laugh about 'over the hill' stuff, so just kind of feel it out and do what you think would be best for her.

This is just my opinion, but I think purple and silver look really pretty together and have somewhat of an elegance whereas bright pink and purple wouldn't, ya know?  So maybe do a color combination that is elegant for a 50th bithday party rather than super bright bold colors.

  • For my mom's 50th, I did pink, purple, and black for the colors.  I did a couple of "Over the Hill" balloons, but that was it.

  • I agree, wouldn't do the over the hill signs.

For my mom's 50th, it was just a regular party with friends and wine. She had a lot of fun :)

  • I agree with everyone else.  I'd forego the over the hill decorations and find another theme based on your mom's personality.  If she would want an elegant party, you could do a black and white theme; if she's more fun, you could do bright colors; etc.

    Good luck!

  • You could do a "Nifty, nifty... look who's 50!" theme. Make the posters yourself and go off that color scheme.

We did a "lordy, lordy... look who's 40!" for my dad last year and it was cute. I made candy bar wrappers with the photo from the ad we put in the paper and a recent photo. Blew up a few copies of the ad and hung them up, and then framed one with a mat for people to sign. (we used a baby pic in the 0)

  • Black can work in one of two ways - it can be dour and dark (think "over the hill"), or it can be fun and sexy (think Little Black Dress).  Every lady has unique feelings about her 50th birthday, and I think you should let your understanding of what your mom is feeling guide you.

There is a 50th birthday theme called "Birthday Fabulous" (aka "Fun, Foxy, and Fifty) which is a mixture of bright pink and black.  Accents like bright pink high heel shoes and martini glasses.

There are some website devoted exclusively to planning a 50th birthday party, with a list of over 20 50th birthday decorating themes that go all the way from funny (Monkey Around at 50)  to teasingly dark (Grim Reaper) to bright and celebratory (Fun, Foxy, and Fifty).  Check out www.50thbirthdayparty.com for a list of themes.  They stock decorations, favors, gag gifts, etc.  There's a 5% off coupon you can use on the site:

    Hope it helps!

  • Sorry I came late to this one. My DH turned 50 less than a month after the wedding. He did not mind the over the hill but I know he will get me back in a few months. Go with what makes the day special for your mom.

I also did a candy bar poem poster for him. The words in parenthesis are replaced with a candy bar. Some are hard to find like symphony which I get at Walgreens. Make changes appropriate for your mom with other candy bars. I got thick poster board at Walmart and used tape to adhere the candy bars (wrap a piece of tape to stick to the back of the candy and board).

name ? Happy big Five (ZERO),

Do you hear a (Symphony) of (Snickers)? [or ?RAZZLES and SNICKERS?]
Do your bones (Krackel) and (Crunch)?

    Do you battle with (Mounds)?

Have your (Whoppers) turned to (Milk Duds)?

Do you feel like an (Airhead)?
Do you act like a (Butterfinger)?

    I think you?re worth (100 Grand)
