As for what to get....
For newborn dipes, Kissaluvs Size 0 (KL0) with a Thirsties Duo Cover Size 1 is a popular choice. KL0s are fitteds so you do need a cover. Thirsties covers you can wipe down and reuse until soiled (not as gross as you're thinking. Rumparooz Lil Joeys are popular too. 2 dipes for $29 and change. These are an all in one, so you dont need a cover.
Hopefully this helps someone! I wouldnt go buying a ton of one type or brand of diaper just in case it ends up not working for your kid. Although, if you end up with a few that dont work, you can always sell them. The Bump's Cloth Diaper board is awesome. Those ladies rock my world.
