can I use year-old potting soil?

it's dried out (in the original bag), but if I just water it well, will it work fine?  I ran out of soil about half way through my last pot, and I'm debating whether I need to go get another bag for it.

ETA: it's for my herb pot - rosemary, basil, parsley, etc...

  • yes, it's fine.

if it's *used* potting soil, it's still fine, but you might want to add a few handfuls of compost to it.

  • awesome!  thanks!

  • You're back! I haven't seen you on MM for awhile.

Anyway, potting soil is good forever. It's dirt. I agree that if it's used, you may want to add some fertilizer of some sort back into it, but if it's just been sitting in the bag, it's probably good forever as far as I know.

I add sand to the potting mix for herbs, as they tend to like lean, dry soils.
