Total garden newb needs advice!

We have a nice little patio in our new apartment and I'd love to put a little window box or a potted plant or something outside for the spring. I know absolutely nothing about growing things and I've killed every plant I have ever purchased. Basically I need something good for absentminded know-nothings, and also something safe for my cat in case he decides to munch on it. Any suggestions? The patio is covered but gets pretty good sun. Thanks!

  • Pansies are best for Spring but in a couple of weeks you can start planting out Summer flowers so you just might want to wait for them.  If you go to your local garden center and tell them what you are looking for they should be able to help you find something that will work.  Most likely you are going to want something heat and drought tolerant that way you won't have to worry about watering everyday.

  • Hostas are a shade loving easy care plant that come in lots of shades of green from yellowish greens to bluish greens.

Any potted plants are not as durable as an in ground plant and you will need to water it. The soil should be damp but not wet.   For any potted plant to get good drainage put a single layer of pebbles (smallish rocks) in the bottom of the pot.

  • I would go with some easy care annuals. If you are in Pittsburgh, you could put out some summer annuals now, but would need to cover or bring them in if it gets chilly. You should pick something easy....wave petunias or profusion zinnias  are good. You can also plant a few easy herbs if you want something to use in the kitchen--and you could plant some catnip for your kitty. : )  Just give it a try!! You might surprise yourself. Get a few pots, some potting soil and ask for advice at the garden center (go to a garden nursery, not a big box hardware store). Be honest about your experience and what you want to do  and they will point you in the right directions.

    GL!
