Moving to Boston in a few months = AWESOME!!

DH and I will be moving to Boston in a few months for his job, and we are super excited.

Right now we live in the suburbs in OH and it will definitely be a change. The apt we have put an application on is located in South Boston.

Anyone have tips to share on living in the city?? I would also love any info for websites/books that would be helpful.

Looking forward to getting to "know" you ladies! :)

  • Welcome!  Southie is a fun part of the city to be in - lots of fun bars and restaurants and more popping up everyday.  I'm not sure if you're planning on bringing a car with you but it can be super tough finding parking in Southie, particularly in winter when there are snow mounds everywhere.  If you have an opportunity to rent a parking space, you might want to consider it.
  • Welcome to the city and the board! I haven't lived in the city for a long time so the only tip I have is to use the T (public transit) as much as possible :).
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Welcome! You'll love Southie - it's a great neighborhood. I stayed with a friend who lived there the summer I moved to Boston, and it was so much fun. If you'll be living near East Broadway, you'll be able to walk to Castle Island my favorite spot in all of Boston, and home to Sully's. Otherwise, the bus gets you pretty close. There are some decent pubs over there - my favorite is the Playwright, but Boston Beer Garden and Shenanigans are pretty good, too.  L Street pizza has the best pizza around, IMO, and a really good breakfast as well.  (Disclaimer: aside from L street, I haven't been to these places in a while.)

From Southie, it's a straight shot to downtown on the bus or subway- mbta.com has all of the bus and train routes.  And as a PP said, parking over in Southie is a full contact sport in the winter - if you have two cars, I'd strongly suggest getting rid of one before you mmove. You won't really need both, IMO, because it's really accessible by public transportation (and taxis), and you'll never find two spots near each other and your apartment.

Best of luck with the move!

  • Yay! Welcome!

I moved to Boston in 2000 and I have been so happy! It's such a fun place to live. South Boston is a big area. I only know the Fort Point area which I love! Sportello is fabulous. I also love Lucky's for an after work cocktail, and Barlow's was pretty good the few times we went there.

If you have any specific questions, let us know!

Welcome to Boston and this board. : )

  • Welcome!

We're moving just south of Boston in June so I'm in a similar boat. Hope to get to know you!

  • Congrats on your (impending) move! And welcome to the board!

I've always lived in the suburbs, so I'm no help with city question.

  • Thanks ladies!

The apt we were looking at did include a garage (score!) which is one thing I was hoping we could have...I have heard about Castle Island, and it sounds awesome. I look forward to exploring.

Has anyone used Stop & Shop online ordering service for groceries (peapod?) A co-worker suggested them but I have no idea how that works or if it's a good deal.

Going through this experience, I am realizing how spoiled I am living in the suburbs now. :)

I used in once a few years back during the winter.  Pretty easy and super convienant.  They do charge a fee, but I think you get free delivery the first time.

    Welcome to the area!!
