If you have hostas please come in

I planted some hosta 'patriots' last year. I live in MN and spring had a rough start this year. Most of my plants have started to emerge except the hostas. If I remove the dead leaves and sticks, you wouldn't be able to tell there was something there. When will they come out of the ground?

  • I'm not an expert but I do have a lot of hostas!  If you remove the dead leaves and sticks, you should be able to see some pointy nubs poking up through the ground.  My hostas have purple flowers in the summer, and when I cleared out the debris a few weeks ago noticed the purple points starting to emerge.  They wont really start coming up for a while yet, but I can usually find the nubs pretty early in the spring.  GL!

  • We're in New England, a slightly warmer zone than you, and our hostas haven't shown up yet.  But they've come back every year so far and there's no reason to think they won't this year.  Just give yours more time.
  • Thanks everyone. I did remove the dead leaves and sticks this afternoon and noticed some dark purple buds. Yeah!

  • My hosta are definitely out of the ground now, but I'm in Zone 7.

One note - the deer seem to love my hosta.  If you have deer in your area, you may want to spray Liquid Fence or something because they start nibbling on mine as soon as they start to break above the ground.

  • I have lots of hostas here in WI including 'Patriot' and they are either still in the ground or just barely coming up.  My beds always look pretty bare until they start emerging.
