My little 10 year old friend, that I have regularily babysat/hung out with since she was born lost her dad in a car accident 2.5 years ago. Then her new pet hamster died 3 months later. In October her maternal grandmother died.
Yesterday her paternal grandmother was found dead (she had been going downhill since her son died). Then they got home from family stuff yesterday and their dog was dead, she had been hit by a car. They live waaaayyyy out in the boon docks and her mom had gotten in the habit of letting the dog hang outside while they were gone (not a good choice, and I'm sure she's realizing/majorly regretting it now).
I don't even know what to do for this girl. She's been through so much and then all of this on top of it all...
Any suggestions on what I could do for her? I'm going to try and hang out with her this week, but beyond that I'm not sure what to do...
Re: How horrible...
May along with spending time with her, you could take her to one of those farms that lets you pet the baby animals. Since it's spring, there should be several opening up to visitors soon. I wouldn't get into a life and death discussion with her, but kids tend to like baby animals and it might be nice for her to see things just starting out in life.
Otherwise, just lots of hugs, loves, and reassurance that you're there for her.
awww...the poor girl
We can relate here. After my DH died, which was July 31st, between then and January 7th, we had 8 deaths in the family. One of which was my grandma also. And an aunt, a cousin, a very close family friend....it was horrible.
Just reassure her that you will be there for her at any time wether it's good or bad. I agree not to get into the life and death discussion, but by all means, if she asks you, please answer. But talk to her about having friends in life that you can count on, and you are one of them. Even if it's to go get some icecream and cry or to go on a rollercoaster and just be allowed to scream! and talk about right and wrong choices in life. (Paul chose the wrong choices to deal with the deaths he had to face)
I remember when you told us her Dad passed away.
Thanks ladies! My boss ended up giving me a half day off today and my little 10 year old friend and I ended up going to the zoo. She wanted to bring my 4 year old niece with too, so we picked her up from daycare. The 3 of us had a great time and it really helped her get her mind off of things.
