yes or no ... ring of flowers and plants around a tree?

i was thinking of some flowering ground cover, maybe a few summer bulbs, some hostas maybe.  nothing invasive to fight with the roots of the tree.

BUT ... i was looking for plan ideas on some gardening sites, and the all said tree rings are no-nos, that they look amateurish.  but i am an amateur ... so, do i care???   when you see tree rings do you scoff ???

  • Some look contrived, others look more natural.

Do what makes you happy. Do you really care what "they" say?

  • Are you planting a new tree?  If not, is your tree already in a tree ring?

If it's an existing tree not in a tree ring, then you can't add the extra soil, especially around the base of the tree/up the trunk.

Personally, we have a tree that the previous owners planted in a tree ring & we can't take the ring away w/out exposing roots.  So, i've planted some bulbs & the like under it.

  • I think they're awesome.
  • That is dumb! I have one - came with the house, but it's an easy and fun place to plant and I get compliments on it.

This sounds so much more appealing than a "ring of flowers".
