Need Leave-in conditioner and pomade recs (I think)

I am realizing I need some new hair products for two issues. I typically like to buy hair products at the drugstore as opposed to the more expensive salon products. Let me know if you have any recommendations on items to try.

1. My hair is super dry since I color it and blow dry it straight (it's naturally wavy). I feel like I need a leave-in conditioner to soften it a bit. When I start to blow dry it after a shower, it just feels a bit tangly. Maybe a detangler might be better but I feel like a leave-in conditioner is more of what it needs to give it some moisture.

2. I have some fly-aways near my hairline and where I part my hair. Recently, I was using my flat iron and some of my hair got stuck in it and it broke off. So, I have these 4" broken pieces near where I part my hair that stick straight up and out. I tried using one of those shine sprays to hold it down but that's not enough so I feel like I need something thicker like a pomade. However, I want it to still let my hair have some movement.

This is a recent photo of my hair. I basically have shoulder length, naturally curly, colored hair, which is thick, and which I blow dry straight with a part on the side. Right now I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner which I like as well as a Pantene straightening product. (I'm going to delete the photo later but wanted to show you what style I have).

  • i would get something with keratin. this set happens to also be good for colored hair. i have very thick, frizz prone hair that i usually blow out and flat iron - my hair definitely dried/straightened faster/easier when i was using the shampoo, conditioner, and serum regularly.

i also like living proof products (at sephora). neither of these options are cheap but i do notice a difference so it is worth the money IMO.

  • One of my favorite leave in conditioners is by Paul Mitchelle.  I know you said you much rather purchase something less expensive, but a little bit goes a long way if you're just using it for a leave in conditioner because you'll be combing it through really well.  The one I'm thinking about has carrot extract in it.

Nexxus makes a great spray leave in conditioner that you can get at Rite Aid or CVS for $10-$12 called Humectress Luxe.  I use it every morning and looooove it.

For a pomade, Sheer Blonde used to make a product called Spun Gold.  I use it very rarely but love it when I use it - though I use so little of it that I don't even know if they make it any more.

  • Have you considered doing some sort of a hair mask?

That's what I'd do, combined with hair protection products.

I love this mask (you can buy in store at Ulta):

I'd also use a heat protectant spray.  I use the Rusk one from the Sensories line, but some people really like the Chi one.

Ditto the Nexxus leave in conditioner.  It really helped my hair.  I've also been using Nexxus pro-mend.  I can't say that it's repaired split ends, but it has definitely prevented more.

Also - I comb condition through my hair in the shower, and then leave it in for the rest of the time i'm in the shower and it makes it much less tangly.  I also re-comb it after I rinse the conditioner out.  It makes a world of difference.  If you can hold off on blow drying your hair for a little bit after showering that'll help too.  I usually wait until it's almost completely dry before I blow dry it.

I don't use a pomade, but after I put lotion on my hands, i'll run my fingers through my hair (before the lotion has set it all the way) and that works good enough for me.

  • Thanks ladies for the ideas and suggestions. I'll check out some of those products.

  • I love to check the product reviews on makeupalley.com before I buy stuff. They've been really helpful.
  • FWIW, I'm always jealous of how good your hair looks!  I guess it's good to know that it actually takes work.  LOL.  I'm less jealous now!

Awww thanks. Yeah, don't be too jealous because the blow-drying process is so much work. My arms actually hurt afterwords like I had a mini workout.

Oh dude, I know what you mean!

I don't use a leave-in conditioner but I do love this smoother stuff by Bed Head . It's $13 with Amazon Prime and lasts FOREVER. A tiny bit goes a long way.

  • Thanks ladies for all of the recs. I also read some reviews online and decided to get the Nexxus leave in conditioner and the Bed Head After Party for the flyaways since those two seem like they will work well with my hair texture. Also, they were both available on Amazon which saves me a trip to the store.

Now I just need to get a haircut which is scheduled on Friday. I haven't had it cut in at least 8 months so I need some of the dead weight cut off. Hopefully I'll have better hair next week with these changes. Thanks again for the recs and advice!
