What is this organic natural meat place you speak of? I need to know about it...and go there asap!

  • It's in Plymouth on Ann Arbor Road. Get off of 275 and go west on Ann Arbor Road, it is 2 miles down on the right in the shopping center past the Papa John's. The shop itself is pretty unassuming, there is a sign out front that says something like Grass Fed Organic Beef and a few signs hanging on the front of the store. Inside there are 8ish chest freezers with many many kinds of meat: Chicken, turkey, beef, pork, bison, venison, sometimes elk, some fish, and sometimes other stuff. It is all organic, grass fed meat and it is delicious!

    Here's the website:http://www.naturallocalfd.com/

And an article about the store and local food:

  • Not to hijack...but has door to door organics started doing meat? How is it?

Yes, it's delicious. I like it a lot, I've used it 3-4 times so far, and I have a few things on order for tomorrow. They have beef and some pork at the moment (including bacon and breakfast sausage in bulk...yumm!)

How do the prices compare to that in the store?

(sorry, I'm using you for google as the store's site didn't list prices Embarrassed

  • For example, 6.99 for an lb of the ground beef. Everything is pretty comparable to other organic, grass fed meat prices I've seen. It will certainly cost more than the stuff at Meijer, it's just a matter of weighing whether or not the added cost is worth it to you. I find the research that grass fed meat is better for you to be very compelling (some of that research is summarized in the article I linked below, but often results in meat that has less bad fat and more good fat!).
  • I'm totally hijacking now... but about 2 weeks ago we made our first grass feed meat purchase and DH has no plans on going back to the regular stuff.

We watched food inc a few weeks ago and it really bothered him. DD is drinking only organic milk, we are trying to make a lifestyle change. I'm looking forward to the farmers markets this summer too.

    Thumbs up! :)

(Food Inc pissed me off more than anything else, they took a TON of stuff out of context, but make the choices for the right reasons - it is healthier for you and your family, period)

  • Thanks for the info. I try to buy organic meat but it is so hard to find and/or SUPER expensive when I find it. I think Whole Foods had grass-fed flanksteak (not sure it was even organic) for $16.99/lb. That's insane. I would rather get it locally anyway. We are also only buying organic milk/butter/half n half. I will check that place out next time we go to my in-laws who live out there.

And yes, I completely believe that organic/grass fed beef is (1) better for you and (2) tastes better! Food Inc is a real eye opener. If you like that movie, you should also read Don't Eat This Book: Fast Food and the Supersizing of America by Morgan Spurlock. He goes into some of the same info as the movie, but even more into things like processed foods besides meat/dairy.  I haven't had any packaged diet foods since I read it. I immediately threw away a bunch of stuff and have never looked back.

  • Oh im totally with you on food inc. - A little heavy in the scare department for my taste.

BUT - basic point is that the method for which our meat is produced is just an invitation for bacteria... and that was enough for us.

Total TMI - but about 3 weeks ago I asked DH to pick up some yogurt on his way home and he shows up with organic... well after a day in the bathroom i was like what the hell this is all i have had for a couple days (morning sickness)

Nothing like 10 active bacteria from the organic yogurt to straighten out your stomach :)

I think it is totally worth it! I was just interested in the price comparison to d2d to see if it would be worth it to drive out to the store. We're not often in that area, but if we are I'll check it out.

    Thanks for the info!

Anytime! I get a lot of "You spend that much on beef!" and I'm like "yeah, and I'm healthier because of it".

If you go to the store in Plymouth, just bring a cooler and make room in the freezer. Everything is frozen there except some chicken and beef stuff. I only go once every 2-3 months.

If people give you a hard time just tell them that you'll spend less on health care later in life because you'll be healthier. That usually shuts people up.
