Traveling

DH has to go to Europe (Germany and the Czech Republic) this summer and then Las Vegas in November for work.  He brought up the idea of me going with him on one or both of these trips since we'd basically just have to pay for my plane ticket.  Is it crazy that I'm considering going to Europe with P this summer?  DH will be working during the day so I think it would be nice to have her with me to at least talk to while I'm out and about during the day.  If I go to Vegas too, we may be able to ask my parents to watch P for a long weekend as she'll be over a year old then.

I should go right?  Anyone been to Germany/Czech Republic before?

This is kind of what I'm thinking.  I mean people do travel with babies... I could probably manage it...

  • I would go.  I went to Germany/Austria/Switzerland/France/Liechtenstein back in 98 and it was awesome.  I had the opportunity to go to Brussels at the end of June for work, but had to turn it down because of school stuff.  DH would totally have gone with me if I were going.
  • I've never traveled with a baby but I would totally go. IMO it's crazy to pass up an opportunity to travel to Europe.  Lots of people travel with infants, so I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I agree.  I think I just feel like it's a big deal because I've never traveled with a baby, let alone to europe!  :)  There's a first time for everything though.

Do I just go and get her a passport like I would do for myself?  I better get on this.  Doesn't it take like 6-8 weeks to get a passport?

  • YES you should totally go!  We are lucky that our parents are going to watch the kids while we get a Vegas weekend together in August. I cannot wait!
  • DH is also possibly going to Europe this summer or next for 2 weeks to 2 months. You bet your booty I'm going along. You should go too, bring P, it'll be an adventure!

Yep, just like you get one for yourself, but it didn't take that long for Dylan's.  Although I expected it to take 8 weeks like they said.

  • I worked/lived in Germany for 11 months, and also visited Prague twice, so I might be able to help you with any questions.

As far as your question about whether or not you should go with the baby, I would say absolutely! Ok, so she's not going to remember it, but you will! And I'm sure you and your DH will have an amazing time.

Yes, you have to get a passport for each of you. They say it takes 6-8 weeks, but it really depends on how busy they are, so you never know. DH's showed up in 2 weeks when we went to Germany and Lake Como, Italy in 2008.

  • I would totally go.  My FIL used to travel to Germany all the time for work and he loved it there.  You and P will have a great time walking around.  FIL totally recommends going to the castles, so be sure to check a few out!

  • Yes!  My friends took their 6 month old on a trip with them a few years back - along with their 1 1/2 year old.  It was fine!  They had fun and I'm sure you will too.

  • Awesome!  Thanks guys!  DH and I are going to talk about it more tonight but I'm totally excited now!  Thanks for the encouragement.  I'm going to go do some research on what to do.  Big Smile

  • My SIL and her husband backpacked across Europe with a 3 year old and a 6 month old.  This was about 5 years ago, but they did it!  They did go to Czech, but I'm not sure about Germany.  Perhaps.  I think you should do it!  They used one of these for their youngest. Brendan enjoyed it too, as you can tell. He fell asleep.  He was about 6 months old there. It's a Kelty carrier. How old will P be when you go?

That picture is adorable!  I just found out it will probably be in September so she'll be about 11 months old.  :)  I originally thought it would be in July and she'd be 9 months old.

  • I would definitely go!

FYI: You will need to buy her a ticket though. It's not a full price ticket, and she doesn't get a seat. But for international flights you can't do 'infant in arms' for free like you can on domestic flights.  It's not as much as a full price adult ticket though. I have a friend who just took her son to China and his infant ticket was $200.

  • Of course I would go, I would not be able to pass up that kind of opportunity!! I think once you got there you would be fine, just the flight might be kind of a pain with a baby.

I went to Prague and Germany (Munich, Berlin, and Cologne) a few years ago (crap maybe longer than a few now!) and they were amazing. I would go back in a second!

  • Yeah, you should go.  I loved Prague!!!  It's beautiful - and cheap!  I've also been to Munich, Germany.  It's a nice town.  Busy.  Just keep a close hold on your purse/belognings.  My co worker got her purse stolen at Hofbrauhaus (the beer joint).  Nuremberg was pretty cool, too.

And as for Vegas, definitely have your mom watch P.  It'll be fun going out with your DH at night to the clubs/shows/casinos.  LOOOVE me some Vegas!!

  • Yes go for it!! Such a wonderful opportunity =) I am 99.9% sure you will need a passport for her.  Also I have been Germany ...you will love it there!! Such a wonderful country.  You will have to let me how it goes with traveling with her please ...because DH and I are talking about planning a trip next year to Europe to visit relatives and our little one will be a year by then.

  • P.S. Lufthansa is a great airline to fly to Europe! One of the best in my opinion =)

  • I say go for it. My brother and SIL live in Germany and I am planning a trip next year for DH, Chloe and I. Please let me know how it goes with P on a plane for that long.
