Utterly random - I love grapes, but...

I have such a weird thing about not being able to eat them if they are not cold, firm all over, and brown-spot-less.  As a kid, I used to actually pick the brown part off all around the top, where it connects to the stem, before I could eat.  Then, they wouldn't really even be worthwhile to eat them (too much work for too little fruit) and I decided I didn't like them.

I'm downright nearly craved them lately, and love them, and bought a TON, but I feel like I throw out a bunch because they're not the right amount of plump.

Am I a total weirdo?  T said I should get purple grapes instead of green b/c at least I wouldn't see the brown on them.  For this reason (how illogical it is that color bothers me), I have been able to eat them if slightly discolored...so long as they are still cold and firm and plump.  Any softness, and I just can't do it.

Tell me I'm not alone!  (or point and laugh at me)

FTR, I feel similarly about blueberries and raspberries...can't be too soft or room temp or have discoloration.  I feel so wasteful though!!

Re: Utterly random - I love grapes, but...

  • I feel the same about the firmness of grapes. I don't care much about a little discoloration (so long as we're not talking about big, brown splotches) or temperature. But soft grapes? Can't do them. I actually test them at the store before I buy... So no, you are not alone. I'm a fellow grape weirdo.

This is me too. Soft grapes are so gross!

  • I'm picky about the temp of food myself. Water needs to be cold, not just not warm. Tea/coffee needs to be hot or iced, not cool/lukewarm. I think I'm more picky about beverages.
  • Totally right there with you!  If they even have the slightest wrinkle, I throw them out.  If they don't crunch, I can't take it!

  • I can't eat them if they aren't crisp.   Have you ever tried the grapes frozen?  So good....

  • So do you guys end up wasting a bunch of squishy soft grapes?  I felt like a freak throwing away about 1/4 of them from my lunch today.

  • I like my grapes cold and firm too : )

    ETA: only Green ones too.

  • Don't worry Steph! You are not alone. I feel every grape & blueberry before I eat it. My kids don't seem to mind the mushier ones, so I feel less wasteful if they eat them :)
  • Totally, exactly the same. I pick off the good grapes and leave the rest until they go bad and then throw them away. It's very wasteful, but the enjoyment of eating a grape lies entirely in its perfect plump pop.
