what to respond?

I requested an informational interview to network with someone and he replied saying no, he's dealing with a difficult life tragedy from last year and won't be able to meet with me. i'm wondering since i don't know the nature of the tragedy what do I respond besides "thanks for replying to my email" that won't come across awkward since I don't know this person or the nature of the tragedy.
