So, we have the (fully refundable) deposit down on the German Shepherd puppy, but my friend and I went and visited her fiance at his work, an animal shelter, today. I guess he felt the need to show me this little princess.

She is about 2-3 months and was brought in as a "stray". Friend says that she is an Australian Blue Cattle Herder or something like that, and is likely a mix of something else too.
Her face is kinda fugly with that line down the middle, but she was absolutely precious.
What should I do? Still get the German Shepherd or rescue this sweet baby? I have no doubts that she will be adopted tomorrow, when she becomes available to the public.

Welcome to the dark side
I'm no help on the decision because I know nothing of either breed (I'm scared of German Shepherds actually because my friend had one growing up and it terrorized me). That pup is SUPER cute.
I'm sure they'll easily be able to find another home for the German Shep especially because it's full blood.
One of our chihuahuas has a line also. Not fugly!! Then again I find very few dogs to be ugly (even the ones that are suppose to be known for being ugly).
Get them both!!!
I'm going to assume that if you've put the deposit down on a GS then that is the dog you've researched getting, temperment, training programs, etc. I'm not that familiar with the breed, but they are different than heelers.
I would say if the heeler is at the shelter and they have good adoption policies, then it will go to a good home. If you want to change direction with what dog breed works best for your family, then perhaps investigating the needs of a heeler over a GS would be good before you make a decision. She is a cute.
DH and I picked our breed pretty carefully based on what we anticipated we could handle, how well they trained, etc. I grew up with labs, but DH doesn't have the patience to wait 5 years for them to "grow up" and DH wanted another Rottie, but I was cautious about their strength and my ability to make myself pack leader with one.

I think you need to go back to the mental/emotional state you were in when you decided to get the GS puppy.
Rescue dogs, cute ones, even, were certainly available back then, but that wasn't the choice you were making.
So, why was the GS puppy the right decision for you then, and what is different now?
First of all, all you ladies that said to get both, I'm shaking my fist at you!!! It took Drew long enough to convince me to get one, I don't think I'll be able to handle two right now. Even though I'm sure Drew would love two. Enablers, all of you!! LOL!
Second, Drew and I had a long discussion last night and read over breed stuff again and weighed out the pros and cons. We've decided to stick with our original decision to get the German Shepherd breed. We still fee like that would be the best breed for what we're looking for.
We actually spent time checking out the different shelters in our area, but we never found any puppies there. It's important to me to get a puppy so that I can focus on training new, good habits rather than breaking old habits and retraining. (Does that make sense?) I've wanted to rescue from day 1, but we've never found a puppy. That's one reason why that puppy stuck out to me. After researching the breed a bunch, we just don't feel like it's going to be a good fit. There was one excerpt that pointed out how much the dogs are herders and will nip at the heels of people, especially young children who run about and squeal. That was pretty much the breaking point right there. Have you ever met a child who doesn't run around and make loud noises at times?
So, after my novel, we're sticking with the German Shepherd. I actually think that we're going to go visit them today so that Drew can see them and talk to the breeder. I'll try to take a picture while I'm there. I'm anxious to see how much bigger they've gotten since I saw them 5 days ago. Their eyes will probably be open now!
