Gardening and such

OK so we only moved in last winter, so we didnt do any work on the gardens/lawn them b/c we wanted to see what was planted and we also didnt have to to, given all our renovating and my planning our wedding :P

BUT NOW I'M READY! I want to have a nice looking house/yard.

Zig's dad came over last night and used some sort of machine on the lawn that rips up all of the weeds/dead grass (i dont think we had any grass at all!) and then put down fertilizer and grass seed. I really hope it grows - ive never had a real lawn in my life. My parents was always just crabgrass. It was very green, but not nice and plush like real grass!

Here's the front of our house:

I'm basically going to rip out the whole little garden area in front of the house in order to re-do it. There's not too much there worth saving aside from a bit of lavendar and a few tulip plants i can move elsewhere. I want to put in some hydrangea bushes since i love those :) and some other stuff...not sure what yet!

And here's the back:

There's some tulips here, but not much. I think i'll put in a few evergreen bushes (small) and add lots more flowers. This side of the house gets much more shade so i have more options.

Then we're going to plant a vegetable garden! So far i plan on Garlic, onions, chives, tomatos and maybe ill try to do potatos too. OH and probably chili peppers :)

What do you have/want in your gardens?

  • So jealous of your yard work (haha - that's not a normal thing people say!). But yea, I want to have a garden that I can plan flowers in and I especially want a veggie garden. I love carrots straight out of the garden - they are delicious!

I'm excited to hear about your progress throughout this spring/summer!

  • I'm going to plant my first garden this year.  I get so overwhelmed when I go look at seeds and plants. I looked yesterday, and left with nothing. Tongue Tied

We haven't even rotor-tillered yet, as the ground is still a bit frozen. I am so excited to have a garden though.

I think I will try carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, gr onions, chillies, and for sure flowers.  I bought tomatoes from a local grower last year and made salsa, it was so good.

I'm trying to decide if I should start some seedlings indoors before planting outdoors, or just plant seeds outside when it's time?

I am also going to try and build a brick herb wall against the side of our house. I found it once on line, but can't find it now. You basically layer the bricks like stairs against the wall and turn one sideways every now and then.  Then you would plant herbs in the middles. I would think you would have to put something on the bottom to hold the dirt and plants in, but not sure what.

    Happy gardening!

  • something to look forward too! how fun, when it's all done it's going to look so good!

I have been wanting to by nice green bushes for around the front of our house, mostly bc the foundation sits up so high and I'm hoping it will cover it a bit. DH's mom has lots of cute trees in her yard, I'm not sure what kind, but I'd like to plant some kind of cute little trees to add a bit of color.

Other than that, I don't have much thought yet. Hope you have a blast making your yard pretty!

  • I am not a big gardener, but DH was thinking we could start one.  So did my SIL. I told her she can plant and I will watch my nephew and she said deal!!!!
  • Taking a quick break from prepping for lectures tomorrow (my last two formal lectures of the year)!  I spent a Sunday morning outside planning our back garden/flowers instead.  However, I don't think we will be able to do much until the middle of June b/c we are going to be away for four weekends in a row.  I may see if a friend can come and water, though so we can plant earlier.

I'm doing lots of flowers (easy to grow flowers!), and at least tomatoes.    We will just get flats instead of growing from seeds this year.
