xp: tell me about 30350 ? roswell ?

H is interviewing for a job and from a mapquest search this looks like it is off of 400 in roswell area?i know nothing about atlanta, if we were to live within a 30-45 min commute of this area, what are some areas that I could look at to get a feel for it? family friendly type areas, safe, good schools, all that? I don't want to be too far out- we are originally from NJ/NYC area and now live in NC and I miss some of the conveniences like the little downtowns, good restaurants nearby...i have no idea of the housing prices there so I'd be open to a range of prices. thanks for any advice/thoughts.oh also I would be working and my line of work would more likely be in the city/outskirts than in office parks, etc in the suburbs.

Re: xp: tell me about 30350 ? roswell ?

  • You will hear this over and over, but - live where you work, traffic is AWFUL. If you are going to work in the city, I would recommend that you live in Roswell, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, or Buckhead. Your husband will have a reverse commute, but since you will be driving towards the city you want to be as close as possible to your job.

Even if you mapquest it, and it says it's only 10 miles, that 10 miles could easily take you an hour in traffic.

If you are planning on buying a home, I would wait until you find a job so you can figure out the best place to live.

  • Thanks...I have heard that about the traffic...and the one time I went down there for a conference I saw it firsthand driving in at like 8pm at night, it was horrible! Ugh.

OK so new question then, are there any colleges/universities in the northern area or are they mostly in downtown atlanta like GSU or south, like emory?

  • Not really. The closest would be KSU, you'd want to go north on 400 and cut across on 92 into Kennesaw to get there. There is a college up 400 in Dahlonega, can't remember the name but it's a good 45 minutes without traffic. Are you going to work at a university?
  • I currently work at a university. I'm not totally married to the idea of continuing that line of work, I enjoy what I do but have other possibilities as well based on what I do, but I would definitely explore it as an option.
  • If you get a job at KSU, eastern Woodstock on the Roswell border would be a good location, your commutes would be fairly equal. It's convenient to lots of great stores. If you're at Emory, Tucker or Norcross would be decent. For GSU/Tech, I'd live in Buckhead near 400, so you're close to work while your husband has a reverse commute. Good luck!
  • There is also a satellite campus of Ga. State off exit 10 (I think?) off GA400 (In Alpharetta). There are also a lot of "private universities" in that area too, if you wanted to look at those.

Speaking of traffic, don't live off of exit 5 off GA400 (Northridge). That exit is a NIGHTMARE in the AM and PM. There are a lot of apartmenet complexes near there, so it would seem ideal, but there is also a lot of crime in that immediate area.

  • GSU and Tech are also steps off Marta (literally), so public transportation is an option, especially if you are living in Roswell.  You can take the red line from Northridge or Sandy Springs straight downtown (although the Northridge exit is hairy, you could live close and take side streets instead of getting on 400).  Dunwoody is a nice area with good public schools and lots of private schools.

Sorry, Exit 6 is Northridge, the sucky one.

  • an example of the bad traffic- i live in Duluth/Johns Creek- work in Alpharetta- 9 miles from home- and it takes me 45 minutes to get to work- and i dont even have to take a highway.

     horrible.

  • oh ewww. lol. thanks for some great tips to get me started looking!!!

so here is another question, at rush hour in the AM or PM, how long is it from roswell into downtown atlanta driving vs public transportation?  just to sort of get a feel for that. I always commuted on subways & trains before living in NC so I'd love to do that again if it is a reliable & well used service...(?)

I suspect we would rent somewhere near his work until I find a job & we decide where to live based on that, we did not do that here & kind of jumped the gun without really exploring a lot of neighborhoods & we do like where we live but always said we would take more time next time.

  • If you live off of exit 7 or 8 off GA 400, it will take you at least 45 minutes in the AM and at least an hour in the PM during regular commute times. If you were to ride the MARTA train, you would have to drive down to the nearest station (20-30 minutes min.) and take a 30 minute train ride. If you wanted to take the bus to the station, add probably another 20 minutes.  Public transportation pretty much sucks here.

Just so you know, the average commute in ATL is about 45 minutes.

  • Thanks! Good to know.

We have shorter commutes now (mine is 30 min) but in NJ MH drove 45-60 min to work & I was 1 1/2 hrs door to door so we aren't unrealistic about commutes...but we didn't have kids then so that will majorly complicate matters for sure... argh. Well, guess we'll see how this interview goes.
