Prenatal Vitamins ? - NO NOT PG

Just had to make that clear...

I know you are supposed to take them for like a year before, and we have talking about trying in 2012...so any recommendations? I have heard there are gummies, which would make me happy and more likely to remember to take them...

Re: Prenatal Vitamins ? - NO NOT PG

  • I take the generic Publix prenatals. I've never heard of having to take them for a year but they are indeed very good for you. They are basically a multi - vitamin with extra folic acid.
  • I take the gummies and they are so yummy! LOL. I used to take the regular pills but was getting so sick so I switched to gummies.

  • I've never heard of taking prenatal vitamins a year before you TTC, but that being said, I have friends who take them just because they are good for you. I had to take special prenatals with a lower iron level when I was pregnant because I couldn't keep any other kind down!
  • I take the Nature's Best Soft Gel vitamins with DHA.

  • There's no need to take them a year prior.  Just be careful - prenatals are a higher dose of a multi vitamin.  Sometimes the iron content can be a lot for a non-pregnant (or pregnant, even) person and can cause constipation.

I took the Women's One A Day - $14/month and I could pick it up anywhere.

  • My OB told us to start taking them a few months before we were TTC so I started taking them in October and we started TTC in December.  I take the generic Target brand but since getting KU I have to take a DHA supplement with it.  Also, the gummies are really good!   For about 4 weeks I couldn't handle the pills as they would make me sick so I had to take the gummies as they were the only ones I could keep down.
  • I take a brand called Rainbow Light once daily prenatals.  It is easy on the tummy with no crazy smell.  It is allergen-free, which is a plus for me.  I also took Belly Bar chewables for a little while (I got them for free since a rep was trying to get us to bring it in here) and the Belly bar DHA citrus supplement (cheap and tasty - you can buy it online, at a Motherhood Maternity store, or at BRU; also, some of them taste a little strongly of the algae that they use, but the other ones were delicious!!)

I also take an additional iron supplement for obv. reasons.  But I take a chelated one that is easy on the tummy as well, so that I don't get...well, you know, back up.  :)

  • My first pregnancy, I just took generic store brands. This last time, I had problems taking prenatals pretty much my entire pregnancy and kept trying new brands, and the only one that never made me feel sick was Trader Joe's.

  • I take the generic brand from Target :-)

  • I love your disclaimer, you know you need it around here! Lol. I take Sweetbay prenatals, Hannaford brand.
  • My understanding is that there is some benefit to taking prenatals before you get pregnant because of the folic acid -- apparently having enough folic acid in early early pregnancy is key, and that's why they want you to take them before you get pregnant. And that's the extent of what I know about that. Stick out tongue

  • Ok, so takeaway message is that starting now is likely jumping the gun. I don't take any vitamins though, so I guess it couldn't hurt to try to get myself into a routine. Thanks for the recs:)

  • Wouldn't it be lovely if they made cupcake or cookie flavored vitamins?

  • I've been taking the Nature's Valley prenatals. I love it, my nails are a lot stronger and my hair grows like weeds hehehe

  • I started taking them the minute we decided to start TTC. I think I was told to start taking them 3mo prior to TTC.
