Alright ladies, what are you reading??
I just finished Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy for the second time. I'm in love with this book! It's seriously such a great laugh...her humor rocks...one of the chapters is titled "Did A Sewer Tank Just Explode, Or Did You Just Fart"...a little blunt, but I read the chapter title and literally giggled about it all day like a 5th grader. I'm going to say that this is a great book even if you're not prego!
Re: Weekly Book Post!
I love this!!
I finished reading the book I mentioned last week. It was by Julia Spencer-Fleming, and was the second in a series. (It was like a psuedo suspense/murder mystery type book.) Last week I mentioned it was just alright, but the more I read into it, the better it got! I ended up liking it quite a bit.
I'm a big Jodi Picoult fan. (I think I mentioned one of her other books last week, because it was the most recent non-series book I'd finished.) I'm reading her again! This time I'm in the middle of Vanishing Acts. If you haven't read it, it's really good. Basically, this woman has a happy life, until she finds out her father (whom she adores) kidnapped her when she was 4. I'm about 1/2 through, and it's amazing!
I missed out on last week's weekly book post, but I'm super excited about this! Reading is my favorite hobby :-)
I'm a huge Jodi Picoult fan as well - just finished re-reading Perfect Match. Disturbing book, but still amazing.
Based on a recommendation from my boss, I've been reading Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch detective series. The first book came out in the early 90s, and there is a new one coming out later this year. It's been interesting to watch the main character evolve. I think I'm on the tenth book. Because I've been reading the books in pretty quick succession, it's fascinating to see how much the world changed between 1994 and 2004 (even though I grew up in the 80s/90s, I take modern technology completely for granted). In the first book the police department just has a couple of typewriters, and the detectives are always having to stop at payphones to make calls. By 2004, it's obviously much more modern. For anyone that has a Kindle, they have first nine books grouped into sets of three, $18 per set.
I just finished reading Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol" which is excellent. I FLEW through the book! Now I'm reading Adriana Trigiani's "Milk Glass Moon". It's the third book in the series about this middle aged woman who lives in a small town in the mountains of Virginia.
I'm also a huge Jodi Picoult fan - I want to read all her books! But she she has so many....and they're all so good!!
I've been thinking about asking for a Kindle/Nook for my birthday...if you have one, weigh in! Pros, Cons, etc.
I just picked up Lauren Conrad's "LA Candy" I haven't started it yet, but I've always liked her so we will see!
p.s. - I am beyond excited to see "Something Borrowed" in theaters May 6. I am counting down the days and hope I'm not disappointed, bc the book was awesome!
I have a Kindle and am IN LOVE with it! My mom got the one with 3g and wifi for Christmas and I'm totally obsessed. The one I have is a bit more than the standard Kindle (maybe 40 bucks) but I have constant 3g acess and can download books whenever and where ever. The nice thing about the Kindle too, is that it looks just like the pages of a book...the background is matte and not lit, and the print on the screen is actual ink. It's easy to read. I highly reccomend!
I second this! DH got me a Kindle last Christmas (2009, not 2010), so it's a slightly older one but it has 3g. I've done a lot of book purchasing right before flights take off, because I always forget to do it ahead of time. At first I wasn't sure that I would like it because I like how books smell (I'm a weirdo, I know) and I was worried that it would hurt my eyes, but after I read about 20 pages I was hooked.
I read "Skinny Bit&h"by Rory freedman and Kim Barnouin. If anyone needs a no nonsense motivator to get healthy, this is a good fast one.
I am currently reading "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. A classic, which I have never read. My DH's aunt is the manager of our local literacy association and finds old books for me. It is very interesting to read a book written so many years ago.
I just finished reading Water for Elephants last night. It was a great book and I really enjoyed it.
I downloaded The Kitchen House today after a friend suggested it. She said that if I liked The Help (and I loved it) then I would really enjoy this book. I'm excited to start reading it!
I just read Room by Emma Donoghue a couple weeks ago. It is about a 19 year old that is kidnapped off her college campus. The man that kidnaps her puts her in a room that is in his backyard. She is there for 7 years and even has a son. Throughout the book the son does a lot of the narrating. It's very interesting, but not a light read.
Last week I picked up My name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira, while at the airport. This is a story about a young midwife that wishes to become a surgeon and is set during the Civil War. Living in N.VA it was interesting to read about so many familiar places and also familiar people in history.
My favorite read in the last month or so was The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. This is the story of the woman behind the HeLa cells, her family, and how the cells affected the family long after Henrietta passed away. The author does a fantastic job of putting the science in simpler language and telling the story of the family. Great read!

I am reading two books:
Water For Elephants. I am only about 10 pages in.
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Friend. This is a very funny book.
I have a Nook. I went with this over the Kindle because I love that I can get library books on it. I have already read one book and I have a bunch of books that I am on a waiting list for. If you don't spend lots of money on books but go to the library a lot, this is a better choice, in my opinion.
RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.
For all of you teachers out there, I'm currently reading an educational book. Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire by Rafe Esquith. He is a 6th grade teacher, so he has ideas for all subject areas. Even though I'm only an English teacher, I'm reading all the chapters about other subjects, too, as his enthusiasm for teaching is very infectious. Plus, he has good ideas that I like to share with my other teacher friends. I recommend it for any educator!
Also, ditto being excited for Something Borrowed to come out in theaters! I loved that book! Typically, I like the book better than the movie, though.
I just filled up my Amazon wish list with young adult lit books that I want to buy for my classroom library. Hopefully I'll get some cash for graduation and be able to purchase a bunch of them. Then I will have all sorts of reading to do!
I like the smell of books too! And DH and I have always wanted to just have bookshelves full of books - I love the way that looks. Granted we could still probably fill up a bookshelf with what we have already but I just worry that if I get a Kindle, I'll never buy a real book again. I don't know why that scares me but it does! haha
I just finished reading Room too...not one of my favorite books despite all of the really good reviews it got. I think it was just a little to heavy for my taste..
I think I'm going to start on Ape House which is by the same author as Water For Elephants (which is also on my to read list) but I just thought it was cool because there's a facility that she talks about visiting that studies Ape behaviors and mannerisms that is in my home town which I thought was super cool haha.
I absolutely LOVE my nook!! I take it everywhere I go
I don't really know how I lived without it before! LOL! I just have the original nook. I love it because it is easy on the eyes and can hold tons of books! Definitely recommend getting one if you read a lot!
This. DH got me a kindle last year and I absolutely love it! I'm currently reading The Book Thief which is very good, but because it is so serious, I'm having a hard time getting through it-work is stressful enough that I think I need something that's a little more "fluff" for now. I'll probably get back to really reading more often when the baby comes and I'm not working during my leave and summer vacation. Plus, right now I'm doing a great deal of baby book reading and reading for the graduate class that I'm taking.
The next book on my list is The Help.
