Re: What are you reading?

  • Right now, it's The Wilder Life, by Wendy McClure, which is about her obsession (for lack of a better word) with the world of Laura Ingalls Wilder.  I'm about a third of the way through, and it's so good. I loved those books when I was little, and this is totally taking me back.

And I just finished Bossypants, Tina Fey's autobiography, which is awesome if you adore Tina Fey (like I do).

  • I just finished Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin. It was great if you are looking for something quick and easy.

  • I just read a bunch of Mercedes Lackey and am about to start Sherrilyn Kenyon's latest book (it came out today).

  • I just finished "Recipes for a Perfect Marriage" by Morag Prunty and enjoyed it.  It's not a self help book like it sounds, but a novel that follows a younger woman and then the diary entries of her grandmom.  Each chapter is the other one talking so it really kept my attention.

  • I just finished a few books. I try to alternate in books with substance with my trashy romance novels.

    Most recent book with substance:

"The Lost Dogs" by Jim Gorant - it's the story of the rescuing of the pitbulls that were taken when they broke up NFL-player Michael Vick's dog-fighting kennel. It was really well done...

    Most recent book without substance:
Suzanne Brockmann's "Breaking the Rules" - I'm also a sucker for torrid romance novels involving her crew of Navy SEALS. LOL...

Next on my list is Jodi Picoult's "Sing You Home"

I've not heard of this one...

Can you for a minute pretend you own a pit bull and tell me if it is totally heart breaking?  Like would you be able to get through a page without sobbing?

I'm always intrigued by the success stories of the dogs that were rescued from Vick's "kennel" but when I run across stories about dogs like Georgia (not sure if she was mentioned in the book, but she's the one whose story broke my heart the most, and left a mark in my memory), I often can't read anymore.

Just curious if this book would do the same, or if I could actually get through it.

Speaking of the Michael Vick dogs, have you guys seen this about Android's dog fighting app for their phones?

  • I'm currently reading:

    - Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner - Though I'm not too far into it so I can't tell if it's good or not.

    - Lance Armstrong's book - It's not about the Bike - He's a little cocky but I find the book pretty interesting.

Chick lit. My favorite of hers is the short story collection, The Guy Not Taken.  But Good in Bed, Little Earthquakes, and In Her Shoes are pretty good as well. Stay away from Certain Girls, though. I bought the hardcover as soon as it came out, and I'm still angry at it, heh.

I also always recommend anything by Jen Lancaster and Laurie Notaro for light, fun reads. Both are humorists/essayists, though LN's novel Spooky Little Girl is pretty good, and JL has a novel coming out in the next few weeks as well. (Though it seems awfully close to her real life, if you've read her blog/books.)

Yep, that was it. And no, I was too much in the "are you effing kidding me?!?" zone to cry over it.

I'm kind of over chick lit in general, though. There's just SO MUCH of it out there now, and all of it seems so derivative and lots of it is just bad. But I used to read the heck out of it.

  • I just finished "Room" by Emma Donoghue. It's written as if the 5 year old boy is narrating, but it was such a good read - I couldn't put it down. I also recently finished "The Glass Castle", but I can't remember who it's by. It's nonfiction, also a good and fast read. Anything by Emily Giffin is also fantastic - I own all but her latest one.

I'm very selective with my chick lit, I do Jen Weiner, and Emily giffen, and sophie kinsella.....mini shopaholic was cute :) ....and if the back sounds good I'll pick something else up......

I heard a lot of people recommend this book. But they mentioned that there's a section of it where he talks about how Vick was killing the dogs (who lost the fights). I don't think I can ever bring myself to read it without crying for days about it. So I'm curious what you think about the book, and if it hard to read too?

As for what I'm reading, I'm on book 7 of the Sookie Stackhouse series. Never read vampire books before because I was never into that sort of thing....but I have to say I'm horribly addicted to this series.

My friend and I refer to those books as "the Crackhouse" because they're, well, like crack. I thought the last couple weren't that great, though, so I'm waiting til the new one is in paperback. (Or if I get it for my birthday, I guess.)  The fourth (Dead to the World) is my favorite; I'm really hoping they don't screw it up on this season of True Blood, but I'm not holding out much hope.

And Ashley, the Shopaholic books make me want to throw things, heh. I just want to shake Becky and tell her to wake the h*ll up. I read the first one, tried to read the second one, and I practically threw it across the room.

Also, I finished up The Wilder Life last night, (which I mentioned earlier in this thread) and if anyone here is a Little House fan, I highly recommend it.  It was so great - really interesting, and parts of it were so funny I was laughing out loud. On the bus.

My sister bought this book for me after a month in college when I went to visit her when she was living in DC and  I spent an amount of money on my dad's credit card that I'm not willing to admit here.  I remember my dad lecturing me about it, and I said, "But Daddy, the watch I bought was less expensive at Bloomingdales, so I bought it there!"  I can't believe he didn't disown me that day.

Anyhow, I have a special place in my heart for these books now, even though I also want to shake her!
