BR - Irrational annoyance/fear
I'm really worried that my baby name August is going to get uber popular. I don't want that to happen.
August is the name of the bad guy in Water for Elephants. Which could help or hurt because people might associate badly with the name. But they might not care and like the name and use it too often.
I've had the name selected for a few years, and I'm slightly annoyed that it is picking up in popularity.
I just checked the baby names board, because I do that from time to time, and it was one of the more popular name posts. It was sort of split for likes and dislikes. I just don't want my kid to be one of like 3 or 4 Augusts in his classroom.
I don't care if people know that is our name, but I do care that it might get too popular.
I know I don't own the rights to the name by any means, which is where the irrationality comes in. But, I'm still crossing my fingers that it doesn't grow too much.
I'm not even TTC dammit. haha.

I don't know that August will get that popular. It's cute but for some reason I don't see it skyrocketing in popularity. Top 500 isn't bad. Our boy name is in the top 250 I think, which is a little too common for my liking, given my common last name, but it's the only name H and I really like and agree on. I just hope it doesn't make it into the Top 100.
Our girl name though, I'm pretty sure that's safe. Not even in the Top 1000 I'm sure!
I totally felt the same way. I was very happy to see Samantha, although No. 15 in 2009, is steadily decreasing in popularity.

Check by state too. (I know it's a little sad that I know these thing, but...) The numbers for states can vary greatly from the numbers nationwide. For example, Sophia is consistently in the top 10 year after year. It's like 30something in Alabama. Maybe we don't have enough of an Italian population. Mia is another that hasn't become super popular here. It probably won't matter with August, because that isn't a top 100 name, but it's nice to compare locally.
Something new to try! I met this adorable old guy in the beverage line at Ikea. His name was August. He said there were five in his family.

lol I'm glad other people have this worry. I'm pretty sure my name ideas (the boy idea hasn't been approved by Clint, though) won't ever be very popular, but my SIL named had her first son Aiden a couple years before the name got popular, and I think she's pretty pissed about it.
I liked having a less common name- you'd think Catherine is pretty common, but I didn't meet another Catherine until high school, everyone else goes by Kate/Katie. On the other hand, I liked being able to buy things with my name on it.
ETA: haha I just checked my names, in 2000 my boy name was #999 and my girl name doesn't appear in the top 1000 for the years on the soc sec website. Yay for old family names!

Yeah, I'm in the name the baby whatever you want camp.
Like Catherine, it was sometimes fun to be able to find things with my name on it, but not really have tons of people my age with my name.
The name I really like for a girl is a top 50 name.
The compromise name for a girl that we probably won't use is something that is gaining rapid popularity- Harper- in the last 3 years it has gone from 439 to 174. Yikes. It is also a Bump favorite. Luckily with out last name it is a little Lois Lane-y, so we probably won't use it, but my H really loves it.
Our boy's name just cracked the top 100 this year, and even if it continues to be popular, we'll use it. It is especially popular in our region- so I'm sure if we have a boy he'll be Parker H...
