XP: anyone know Ocean City (MD) well?
We're looking at taking a long weekend in July to go there, but don't know much about the area, just going by maps. I see there's a Jolly Roger Amusement park - is that a good place to be near (LO will be 1.5 yrs old this summer)?
Any areas to stay away from? Is there a party crowd/college area? A family area?

I grew up not too far from OC... What is it you're looking to do while you are there? If you're just looking to hang out on the beach most days, any location is fine, really, as there are a fair amount restaurants and stores up and down the highway. If you want to be within walking distance of the boardwalk, however, you'll want to stay on one of the lower numbered blocks (there's also an amusement park called Trimpers that is just off the boardwalk; that's the one we always went to as kids). However, the closer you are to the boardwalk, the noisier it will probably be. I don't think there are particular areas that are known as party areas, but I would avoid staying right next to any of the major bars (e.g. Seacrets).
Personally, I prefer Rehoboth or Bethany beaches over OC - they're more laid-back, family-friendly towns. Their downtown areas are also very walkable, whereas you have to get in the car to get around in OC (unless you want to stay within a block or two of your hotel).

My parents live 30 minutes from OC and I worked down there for three summers. Personally I like the higher numbered streets better if I am going to stay down there or go to the beach. I would start looking at places to stay around 54th street or higher. The beach is quieter and there is more room to spread out.
Jolly Roger is around 28th street I think which is a fine area. Dunes Manor is right near there and that is a good hotel to stay at. It's like the tail end of the boardwalk if I remember correctly.
I would avoid staying around 49th Street because that is where Seacrets is (big OC bar) as it is pretty noisy all night around there. Even though I've heard it's a nice hotel, avoid the Coconut Malorie as well as it is right in front of Fager's Island which is another big bar/nightclub.
As a plug, if you do go to OC, have ice cream at Dumser's. I worked at the restaurant on 49th street and the ice cream is delicious! I made my husband and two friends try some this summer when I took them down there for a weekend and they loved it. There is also a restaurant location around 125th street and 2 (I think) stands on the Boardwalk. I also love getting Thrasher's french fries on the Boardwalk.
Yeah, if you're not set on OC, I would look in to these or Chincoteague, VA. We frequent all of them and OC is the place I least like to go in the summer. (Although, we're actually going there this weekend, coincidentally.).
That being said, I think with a LO I would stay in the higher numbered streets mainly because the beaches are less crowded. My inlaws used to have a place at 71st street on the ocean side and I thought that was perfect. In particular, because there aren't high rises in that immediate vicinity and you can walk to a few restaurants (The Bonfire is not great, but we like Big Pecker's, despite the name, especially for breakfast).
You can always drive or take the bus down to the boardwalk for other entertainment. I agree on Dumser's - I'm looking forward to a brownie sundae!
I grew up going to OC every summer
we still go every year but now my parents have a house in Berlin and we go to a beach club in OC that has a pool and parking etc. That's located really close to route 90 and not on the boardwalk.
We would stay at the Marriott at 17th street (which is pretty much the end of the boardwalk) before my family bought a house. It's on the boardwalk, has two nice pools including a cool kid pool. The boardwalk amusements rides are at the other end but there is a people mover thing that drives back and forth all day. It does cost $ per person but seriously the bus is like party bus even though it's cheaper. I hate being on the bus with the teens haha. If you want to be away from boardwalk action I'd stay anywhere that's above 17th street.
I'd avoid going after high school graduation which is in mid-late June.
When my nieces and nephews were young we'd take them to Fish Tales for dinner, it's kid oriented. A lot of restaurants I like are further up toward Delaware like Nick's ribs and Mackys. I just love the tables sitting in the sand at Mackys and the kids grab little fish nets and play in the bay while you wait for food. My family used to always go to Phillips seafood but I havent been in a while. I dont know if it's still good.
We went to Chincoteague when we were kids and LOVED it.
We usually stay at the Best Western hotel around 60th Street. It's very close to the 2nd entrance into OC (less traffic than coming in) but still very convenient to the boardwalk and the higher numbered areas. It's right in the middle, and just a few streets away from Fager's Island. You should go to Fager's Island during sunset, because it overlooks the bay and is beautiful and they play 1812 Overture as the sun is hitting the water. They have fine dining and a casual area.
Seacrets and the Boardwalk are the party areas. I think the hotels closer to the boardwalk tend to be older, and parking is a little more difficult.
