Have any teachers ever done tutoring?
I am SAH but in the next six months or so might want to start doing something very, very part time just as a little extra income. Have any teachers on the board ever tutored? if so, was it something you would suggest? If you don't mind me asking, how much did you charge? Also, what ages did you tutor, how did you get clients, how much prep was involved, and where did you tutor? Thanks!!
Re: Have any teachers ever done tutoring?
Someone approached my sister (a former teacher) last summer about a possible part-time job at LearningRx. They don't tutor, they do 'brain training', which from what I'm reading on the website is working with people to improve their cognitive skills. If I recall, the pay was in the low teens/hr. Here's the website, if that sounds interesting at all.

I tutored several students from my school. I just let colleagues know that I was going to be tutoring over the summer and they sent kids my way. I charged $20 an hour and I probably spent a few hours at the beginning getting basic plans and materials set up. I imagine that you could charge more being in the DSM area. The range for our area is anywhere from $15-$30/hour. I tutored students from age 7-12. I enjoyed it and I loved the flexibility of it, we met at the public library for most sessions.
West Des Moines Public Library has some kind of tutoring list that they often use, you may want to check into that resource.
I'm surprised that you were able to use your classroom. We are not allowed to do that in Ames. In fact, we got an email regarding tutoring which basically stated we would be in danger of losing our license if we tutored students from our district. That has sense been clarified to state you can not solicit tutoring. It was quite the uproar a few weeks ago since many teachers tutor during the summer months.
