I went to a new salon and saw a new stylist over the weekend and got my hair highlighted and cut. I'll try to make this short. I paid $92, with tip, for my hair. She had been at the salon for 3 months and the only reason I got her was because she answered the phone and she made it seem as though I was "fresh bait" so she took me. Maybe that's how salons work, idk.
1. She gave me a hand massage while my hair was setting. It was great until she told me I should get my rings resized because of the dent in my finger. Well, thanks. My Mom has a 'dent' in her finger and she's not overweight in the least bit.
2. She sat next to me the whooooole time my hair was setting. Although she gave me a magazine to read, when I paged through it, she kept commenting on whatever was on the page. Awkward. If I knew her and she had been my stylist for awhile, it would have been normal I guess, we could have chit chatted and caught up and whatever.
3. You can't even notice my highlights. I asked her several times when picking the color what her opinion was. Being that she was the professional, I figured she'd give some opinion. She didn't. I picked my color. I really had no idea if it would look good or not. Maybe I needed to be more direct with her when asking her opinion?
4. I was there for 3hrs. I had shoulder length hair, maybe an inch or so longer than that. Maybe it seemed so long because of the awkwardness and overall unhappiness. At the end of my appointment, I told her it looked good but I was also in a time crunch and was mainly in a hurry to get out of there. I thought maybe it would be more noticeable outside of the dark salon. Nope.
5. As she was sitting awkwardly next to me, she was sort of playing with my hair and said "your hair feels dry." I know I have dry-ish hair, but she never recommended any product. I think she used a leave in conditioner but never told me about it or suggested it to me.
6. I showed her a picture of a haircut that I liked. She never looked at the picture for a reference as she cut, she just cut my hair to barely touching my shoulders then added layers once it was dry.
7. She talked about herself a lot. Telling me about her PT job and how she was the best cashier her GM had and how her GM loved her and blah, blah, blah. And how the tattoo artist told her she was "badass" for getting her first tattoo on her forearm.
Overall, it was just a weird experience. Maybe I am just shy, introverted and awkward, idk.
I called the owner yesterday but had to leave a message. She returned my call, saying she was with clients all day but I could call her this morning. So, I did. No wonder her employees aren't peppy or anything...she was so monotone and really didn't seem like she cared.
She said I could come in and they'd "take a look at it" and that "they all wanted me to be happy with my hair" but the tone of her voice was almost sarcastic.
So... with all of that being said. WWYD? Go back and have them "take a look" or just let your hair grow, deal with it and try a new salon again in 6-8 weeks.
I'm on a mission to find my own stylist. I rarely get my hair done and I want to have "my stylist" that I'll always go to etc.
The last time, before Saturday, that I got my hair done was about October or November. I know, yikes.
Any recs for great stylists in the Chaska/Eden Prairie/Minnetonka area? I could go to the lady my Mom goes to, I know her very well and she grew up cutting our hair. But... I want to go to my own person, you know?
sorry..that was long. I appreciate your advice!
Re: WWYD re: unhappy with appt at hair salon
Personally every time I've got back to a salon after they messed up the first time it only gets worse. You could try it, but I would personally move on and chalk it up to experience.
I (along with a few other nesties) see Katrina at Cole's Salon in Eagan Station. She is a former/part-time nestie and is seriously fabulous. She has been doing my hair for the past 2 years and I have never been happier. I was always so jealous of the people that had THEIR stylist who knew their hair and could give them the results that they were looking for. Katrina is absolutely awesome and does that for me.
I am closer to the Eden Prairie area too, but the drive it well worth it to me to get hair that I love.
We're kind of going out.
As far as the general awkward-ness of the appointment - some people have "it" and others just don't. I can't describe it any other way. It sounds like your stylist doesn't have "it" at all.
I agree that it might be just best to leave it. If you didn't get a good vibe from the owner/manager, trust your instincts on it and leave it be. It sucks, but you don't want them to make it worse. They would only have to re-color your hair, which could cause damage if they bump it up too much to try and overcompensate for there not being enough. Your hair will only get shorter - not longer - if they try to do more to it. You are just best to let it be.
I used to do hair, so maybe it's just me - but $92 for a cut, foil and tip isn't that much money. At least not to me. I used to pay $135 for a foil at Juut (with my girl Amy who moved back to chicago!! sad..) but I loved what she did and she was worth every penny. It did take about 2 hours (start to finish) for a full foil. The three hour time window seems reasonable for a foil, cut and style.
I also see Katrina at Cole's Salon Eagan Station (former knottie/nestie) and I love her. She doesn't cost nearly as much as what I was paying at Juut.

I'm so glad you replied because I knew you used to do hair! Maybe the $92 just shocks me a little because I rarely have my hair done and have never found someone to do it just right.
And yes, my hair will only get shorter which isn't really what I wanted.
I'm going to look up Katrina. I'll be sure to tell her you ladies recommended her. Yes, the drive will be worth it if she can make me swoon over my hair!
ETA: Yeah, I'm sure it'll definitely be worth the drive. She's only 20 minutes from my work or 35 mins from my house. My Mom drives about 2 hours round trip to see her stylist.
I wouldn't go back after an experience like that. I have found if they mess up once they will just keep messing up. I agree it's reasonable price. I pay $130 with tip for cut, color and highlight.
I used to see Sara at Salon 500. I LOVED her! We have moved and I have been trying to find one in town but thinking it is more worth to drive north to here.

I'm sorry - that sucks. I've been in that situation a couple times. Last summer I went to my cousin's salon and she colored my hair - it washed out and almost turned green. She redid it, but it still didn't stick - seemed like a bad brand of hair color for me. I ended up just going to a different salon after that.
I LOVE Hannah Jean at M Elizabeth Salon in downtown Chaska. She does an awesome job, and she's really cool. I started going to her a few years ago and I've referred a few people to her - and they have always been happy too. You pronounce Hannah like "Han" Solo (yeah, that is the only example I could come up with!). If I didn't move 3 hours away I'd still be going there... in fact, I'll probably still go there this summer.
That's where I went.
Oh! Well, I'd agree with you on the owner. She seems a little different.
I'm pretty certain you didn't see Hannah Jean, since she's worked there for a long time and she's nothing like the person you described.
Honestly, I would call back and say you'd like your hair fixed and by someone different - then request Hannah. She's done my hair many, many times and I've always loved it. (And I am very picky!) You shouldn't have to pay if you schedule ASAP - some salons have a policy where you have to tell them you're unhappy with the cut/color within 48 hours or so. Just make sure you tip Hannah, since she'd be doing the work and not getting paid.
I've never had anyone but Hannah there, so she's the only person I can recommend. Hope that helps.
