laundry Q - cooking spray splatter

We had a bit of an issue with a faulty can of cooking spray a while back.  DH popped the cover off, and all the spray that had oozed out into the cap went all over his sweatshirt.  It's been washed a few times - because he's a man and doesn't think about stain treating until it's too late.

Any good ideas on how to get the greasy spots out of this sweatshirt that he insists on wearing all. the. time?

  • Has it been through the dryer or just the washer?

If it's been through the dryer, you may be too late.  Usually when grease stains go through the dryer they are stuck there permanently.

For pretreating grease stains (and pretty much everything else), I like to use a bar of Fels Naptha.  It's old fashioned and cheap and works remarkably well.  I wet the stain, scrub it with the Fels Naptha, rinse, and air dry.  If the stain is gone, then I wash it with the regular laundry.

  • Agree with Kimberly right down to the Fels Naptha! When in doubt I use that, unless it's blood and then I turn to hydrogen perioxide
  • I had a coffee stain on my favorite shirt and was determined not to toss it.  I ended up using Oxi clean laundry stain pre-treater.  It took four or five washes, but if finally came out!  I'm actually wearing it today :-)

  • I've had really good luck with Shout Advanced. It's gotten out some set in grease stains and other spots that I thought were lost causes.
  • DISH DETERGENT!

I read this somewhere a long time ago and now I use it whenever I spill something greasy on myself.  Works like a charm!
