anniversary gift ideas

Last night DH just told me that he's really excited about the anniversary present he got me. This is awesome, except for the fact that our trip to Hawaii was supposed to be our anniversary present to ourselves and now I only have like 3 weeks to figure something out for him.

It's our 5th anniversary and I looked up what the 5th year gift is and it's wood. Of course, the 12 year old boy in me is all "heh, heh, I'm supposed to give him wood for his anniversary" So I thought that maybe I could do some boudoir-type pictures, but 1) they are way more expensive than I thought and 2) that just adds to the group of pictures that we hope our child never sees. (NOT that we have ever done *naughty* pictures, we just happen to have a lot of pictures where we are visibly intoxicated and doing dumb sh*t)

For those reasons and a host of others, I'm passing on that idea and I have thought of nothing else. He is so freaking hard to shop for :-(

Does anyone have any unique gift ideas that you did for your H? I'm open to all suggestions!

Re: anniversary gift ideas

  • It's not really unique, but I surprised DH with a pic of DD and myself and put it in a really nice wood frame for our 5th.  I had DD's 3yr. old professional pics done and I got in a couple pics with her and we got some really cute shots of the 2 of us.

filled with his favorite brew, of course! you could probably have the seller use a graphic/typography you designed

    snort!

We've talked about getting a nice, wooden bench for our garden for our 5th anniversary. Other ideas include vintage furniture (chair for a desk, entry table, etc), wood carving (we got some panels on our HM in Thailand & would like a few more), and other similar things for the house.  We do joint gifts for anniversaries, though.

I was going to say something similar -- a (wooden) picnic table and benches for your patio, perhaps, or -- my fave -- Adironack chairs for the two of you? LL Bean in Tysons has some nice ones, but you can find them almost anywhere now.

  • I can't say I am a lot of help of help since we skipped cards and went to Chuck E Cheese that evening with the kids and MIL.  I really want to get DH one of the driving experiences at a nearby racetrack.  He isn't terribly into NASCAR or anything but I know he will love the rush - he likes jumping out of planes and stuff like that which has been seriously curtailed since the kids came along for time purposes.  Does he have the tech stuff he wants?

Even though we didn't celebrate on our anniversary itself we will be doing a night away from the kids for dinner and a hotel locally, which I suppose would fit with the wood theme.

  • kewlie...thanks for making me spit out my coffee laughing this morning :-)

And everyone else, thanks for the recs...I like the idea of a bench or chairs, but DH wouldn't be all that excited about it. And he does love tech stuff, but part of what he loves is doing the research finding what he wants. Plus, there's nothing new right now that he doesn't have...his new job is about to give him and iPad2 (grrr) and he has the cell phone of his dreams right now.

See, he is har--errr, difficult to shop for!!

The only thing I have thought of in the mean time is making a photo book of our vacation to Hawaii, but that would really be both of us....plus, I am not sure when I'm going to have time to do it between now and our anniversary. Boo.

  • What about an activity that he might like? Something like a hot air balloon ride, a NASCAR (or similar racing) thing?

  • Today's Living Social deal is for a kayak tour of DC and the Groupon for today is a racing experience.

    Echoing on the experience idea...

What about arranging for a babysitter for a day & going out to Shenandoah with an extravagant picnic basket (sparkling wine! good cheese! fancy meats!) & go for a hike...in the woods.  Or even some other fun date

eta: my thought process is that an experience can be a meaningful gift & not have to be as time consuming as putting together a photobook.

  • Playing off the wood theme - does he like to build or fix things, perhaps a power tool?  I know my DH loves his dremel and finds all sorts of uses for it.
