speaking of law and order

I'm watching SVU. A few annoyances:

1. Whenever the are dealing with a spanish speaking person, they have them speak in a thick accent, and then have them break into spanish randomly throughout the convo with the two white english speaking detectives. Like spanish people are ignorant buffoons who cannot maintain a conversation in one language, even though they were speaking that language just fine two seconds earlier. It's offensive really.

2. When they're discussing a case and the coroner shows up out of the blue right at the pivotal moment to shed some light on a previously unknown detail. Um, news flash, coroners do not deliver reports in person. If they do, it's rarely right at the exact second that that piece of pertinent info changes the whole case.

Yes, I know it's tv, but the exaggeration is annoying. It's supposed to be realistic, so these deviations annoy me.

  • they let luda do his acting thing...so they will forever be in my heart Wink

  • It is hard to watch that show as a lawyer. Multiply the suspension of disbelief a normal person needs to have by about 25, and that's the only way a lawyer can enjoy that show. Not just the outrageous legal arguments they make, but other crazy stuff (ex parte communications, the way that a trial magically happens immediately after they find the perp, I could go on and on...)

That said, I still usually watch it anyway.... Embarrassed

  • I don't watch SVU, but I do know many people who have conversations in multiple languages and switch them as they go along, so I wouldn't see that as offensive. One friend in particular and his boss are notorious for going from English, to Spanish, to Portuguese while on the phone. Several other friends often speak English and Portuguese in the same conversation. I've asked about it and the switch is often for ease, in knowing the right phrasing, getting the point across quicker, etc.

Yes, but that is when they are talking to each other. I do this sometimes with my Dad. However, if your Portuguese speaking friend is speaking to an english speaker only, they are not switching back and forth between english and Portuguese

    fact.

  • i also think anytime you have a specialty...it's hard to watch a dumbed down tv version of that.

my friend's mom is a NICU nurse, and she cannot watch grey's anatomy...she just gets so mad!

there aren't many shows that have people in local news...but i yell at the tv every time they do something totally unrealistic at the station mouth works/worked at on OTH.

  • Medical shows crack me up... I especially like the Drs who do ALL their own work, including labs, blood draws, and chest compressions, in House. I wish I knew some doctors like that...
