Dog training- NE philly

I have a two and a half year old lab who is VERY good but has a few small issues... she barks whenever someone comes to the door and bombards them when they come in and barks for a minute or two and then she is fine. She also pulls when we walk her.  She knows the basic commands, sit, stay, down, high five, etc. and will come when we call her, as long as there is nothing more interesting to keep her attention haha

So I am not looking for a puppy training class but I was wondering if anyone knew of any classes in the NE area or within a half hour that they would recommend I'd appreciate it!!!

Re: Dog training- NE philly

  • I'm not sure where you are in the NE, but I just signed my dog up for classes through Operation Ava at their new location in Northern Libs. The Adult Basics course runs for 6 Tuesdays beginning in June.  You can probably find info out about it on the Doggy Style website, since Op Ava is their rescue program.  If you need more info, I might be able to dig up the email.

Edited: If driving into the city is an option, of course...
  • Driving it would probably be tough since I work in the city and would have to fight traffic out of the city to get the pup and then drive back in fighting traffic again... we are up near Bensalem so it would be a bit of a hike... thank you for the recommendation though!

  • We did training at the SPCA on Erie Ave.  $50 for six week training program.  It was very helpful.

Another idea for the pulling while walking, my dog did that, and I purchased an easy walk harness (sold in the training area of Petsmart, petco)  one of the cross straps of the harness prevents them from pulling.  I tried it out on my dog in the store and saw a difference right there in the store.  It is $30, but it was worth it.

  • Thanks for the suggestions... we've used things like the gentle leader in the past but I want to work on the underlying behavior as well!
