Hi all I'm coming over here from the BaH and MM boards with some questions and hope that someone can fix me LoL.
I'm beginning to feel like I have been on every BC around, I know I haven't but thats how I feel. I have my annual next week and my Rx ran out so I need a new Rx regardless.
Here is a list of the BC's I've been on since college:
Ortho-Trycyclen LO- UGH remember those commercials "If you took this and experienced fainting and black outs call...." Yeah that was me. I passed out in the shower and that was the final straw, I would also black out and get dizzy. Weight gain (minimal but super high activity at this time). Sex drive good.
Ortho Evra- The patch. I was very active (spent 5-7 hours/day 7 days/week at the barn working/riding) and I couldn't keep it stuck on, plus I felt like I could scrub around it. Supposedly they have revamped the patch, its been at least 5 years since I tried this one.
NuvaRing- No. Sex. Drive. Ev.er. Weight gain (20#) and even though they say that it can be left in for sex blah blah blah. Yeah it was painful when left in and sometimes came out on him (image was amusing, once. maybe even twice. after that it got old)
Yaz- Most recent. Meh. My drive still sucks, no weight gain. But no weight loss. Headaches. (used both generic and name brand)
I'm allergic to the world (it seems) the one that would apply here would be Latex. The allergy has gotten worse over the years, we actually used latex condoms when I was in high school with little problem (if we went a little wild and I had contact with several a week there would be slight irritation) now there would be swelling and irritation immediately.
So here I am with an expired prescription, no BC, no sex drive, and no options (in my mind) HELP PLEASE!
If it helps basic health background: mid 20's, high family history of breast cancer (start mammograms next year), thyroid condition (currently un-medicated), technically overweight (5'3" ~160#, although I wear a 34DDD that none of the scales take into consideration), headaches are constant anymore, chronic back pain. I have only one sex partner, he is admittedly "over sexual" and could have sex 4 times a day everyday, I would be happy with 2-3 times a month. It used to be everyday, I would like to make it a happy medium.
Re: BC and crappy drive
Have you had a hormone level work up? Hormone imbalances usually go along with thyroid conditions and definitely impacts sex drive.
I believe Paraguard has latex. NFP may be a good idea as well.
I had a full fasting blood work done last April (when they found out about my thyroid), that was the only thing that they found to be out of whack. I can't say for sure that they did a hormone level work up though. I will be sure to ask about that when I go to my annual. I have changed doctors, I wasn't happy with my last doctor (hence the un-medicated thyroid atm)
I did some research on Paragard and it actually does not contain latex. I'm finding many things are now made latex free.
Thank you for the advice, I'm making a list for my appointment
I'm no expert here but with all the BC you've been on I can't imagine all of the switching and moving between BCPs is any good for your hormonal balances and general health. There are non-latex condoms like these: http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/lifestyles-skyn-premium-polyisoprene-non-latex-lubricated-condoms/ID=prod4021750-product?V=G&ext=frgl_Google_Health_and_Well-Being
Personally if I were you I'd go to the appt like you said and I'd also take a break and see how your body does sans-pills. NFP/non latex condoms might be a great way to go for you too - just a thought.. good luck!

I'm glad I'm not the only one
My mother also had some issues with BC not too long ago but we marked it off as nearing menopause. I have considered an elective boob-ectomy, just can't afford it since insurance won't. I have said if I ever come up in the boat that I just want them chopped off, my insurance covers reconstructive surgery.
NFP makes me nervous, while I'm ready for kids I'm waiting for a ring
As for the statement about switching between BC's and reactions. Per doctors orders/suggestions each time I have gone at least 3 months without medications to let my system "cleanse" before starting anything else.
Another side effect I had forgotten: Nuva Ring made me a "not happy person" as my BF would say. I would snap at people, I was never happy, didn't want to do anything, and didn't realize it. The first two weeks that I was off of it I realized how crappy it was and how much happier I became.
If you go to your library and read Taking Charge of Your Fertility you'll be able to figure it out. It's a lot easier than you would think. The book explains everything. I promise
You didn't have any time stamps on how long/short it was between switching medicines which is why I said that, I'm glad you were able to take a break between all of those.
Best of luck to you!

hello,
I have low thyroid Hypothyrodism, I know before I was diagnosed I had very little drive. You may want to get it checked out. Have you tried loestrin 24 BC? It helps with my cramps and lighter periods. Hope I was some help.
Good luck!
Thanks guys! I will definitely ask about Mirena and Loestrin.
Ugh Allergies...thank god Allegra is now otc. Identified allergies: Latex, Nickel, Fresh Tomatos, Hops (think beer not bunnies), hay, grass, rag weed, bees, and of course pollen. I live on a hay farm and have ridden horses my whole life...someone hates me.
