Dogs afraid of storms
So, is anyone else's dog afraid of storms?
My 80 lb dog turns into the biggest baby! If it's in the middle of the night he'll come up and wake one of us up so we can pet him. This morning when it was thunder & lightening he got so scared he came into the bathroom as I was getting ready, walked passed me, and then got in the shower! Cracked me up! It was so hard to get him to go outside to go to the bathroom before I left for work.

Yes, our one dog is super scared. We have a Xanax prescription, but if we give it to her while the storms are going on (like the middle of the night), it is kind of a lost cause. She is literally inconsolable. I wish she would just let us hold her, but she paces, circles, pants, tounge hanging out of her mouth, whimpering, barking, etc. It is really stressful on us because there is nothing we can do except try to calm her down, but it usually lasts a whole storm.
When it started up this morning, I gave her a Xanax. She is better now, but the storms have also stopped. I used to love a good storm, not now!
Our other dog is totally aloof to it, our cats hide, but Olive comes completely unglued.
Yes I have a dog like this. He will pace, pant, lick, pace some more, act out, cry, pace even more, pant more...etc... All equals ANNOYING.
I know you didn't ask for advice or anything, but I use a product called Composure. They are a natural chew "treat" that has calming agents in them. They work great for me. I give my 50lb dog two chews with some food when a storm hits. In about 20 minutes he is calmed down. It doesn't take all the anxiety away, but it brings it down many notches where he is tolerable. I get it on Amazon for about $18/bag (60 chews).

One of my dogs is very afraid of them she will shake for most of a storm.
Our other dog has never really cared until recently she will wake us up, I think because the scared dog gets her riled up.
Thanks for the tip - we too have a panting, shaking mess of a dog anytime there's thunder. Poor guy was glued to my side all morning long.
My dog is so scared too, which is crazy b/c he is such a little shiz...like fearless until he hears loud noises. I felt so bad leaving him this morning..i left the Tv on kind of loud hoping that helps.

Luckily my dog isn't too bad. But has anyone heard of a thundershirt? One of my friends has a dog who is terrified of storms. She just got this so I'm not sure how good it is working though: http://www.thundershirt.com/.
Hahaha this is so my dog! When she is fenced in the yard she thinks she is the bomb watch dog though on walks she totally doesn't make a peep. I have a sneaky feeling a baby crying is going to send her into spasms.

yep. I have the same problems. My 96 pound baby is scared of thunder. She hides in closets, bathtubs, under the bed, etc.
One of my cats is too, the other one could care less. She was in bed with me this morning when there was a huge crack of thunder, she hightailed it underneath the bed and was still there when I left for work this morning, even though the thunder had stopped.

I hope it works too, but honestly I am willing to try anything just to make him less afraid, as long as it is something safe for him. I appreciate the rec and if it doesn't work, at least we tried!!!
Glad to know my dog isn't the only one! My morning was the same as yours! My 70 lbs dog was hiding between the toliet and the wall as I was getting ready, he then followed me into the livining room where he decided to "hide" under the endtable and only his tail hanging out! He is mess everytime a storm comes.
