Tell me I'm not the only one...

...who isn't dropping pregnancy weight like magic.  It seems like everywhere I turn someone is saying how they are back in their pre-pregnancy clothes, etc.  While I'm back in some I'm definitely not back in all of them.  I'm losing weight but, slowly, and am still carrying a major belly pouch!  From what I've read, they say it takes 9 months to put it on, it often takes 9 months to take it off. I just feel like I'm the only one somedays!

Re: Tell me I'm not the only one...

  • um. no. your not the only one. i feel your pain a friend of mine's son just turned 4 weeks and she is 2 lbs away from her pre prego weight.

i did lose it all but it took a good 6mos or so. and i had BFing and some PPD to help with that. the meds from the PPD made me not want to eat at all.

with the nicer weather im sure you will see it coming off more with walks and things!!!

i have a wedding that im in 2 mos after my due date and im nervous. Tongue Tied

  • I think it totally depends on many things - how much you actually gained (since anything over 15-20 lbs is yours to lose, not baby weight), whether you are breastfeeding/supplementing, and your activity level. Plus if it's normally at struggle for you to lose weight it will be after pg too. I was lucky - I lost all the weight quickly but with both PG I had GD and only gained about 20 lbs, most of which was gone in a week b/c I had 9 lbs babies plus all the other placenta and fluid weight was gone. Plus after baby #2 I was so stinkin busy I was very active.

Now, fitting into pre-pg clothes is a whole diff story thanks to my lovely new flabby middle (made even worse with baby #2) and wider hips....

  • I lost all the weight really quickly, but I do NOT fit into my pre-pregnancy pants because my hips are wider and my tummy looser. It's pretty awesome (please note the sarcasm).

Heck no, not the only one.  I was fatty mcfatterson after having my babies.  My friends were all back to skinny minnies within a month, if that!  Honestly, DD2 is 15 months, and it really has only been the last 4 months since I have finally managed to squeeze into my pre-pregnancy jeans.  And the belly pouch, forget it, I never lost that after having DS 3 years ago.

  • Robin...I will tell you...I gained 40 lbs with Indiana and 35 lbs with Reid...within 2 weeks I was within 10 lbs of my pre preg weight..then all of a sudden when my milk really came in and I was nursing like crazy I GAINED 10+ lbs back in like a weeks time...I nursed Indiana for 16 months and Reid for 12 and only after I stopped nursing them both did I start to lose a little bit. I have really had to work at it for both of them to get it off...I'm still not there yet with Reid and I am still 20lbs more than I was when I found out I was pg with Reid...and 10lbs more than I was 2 weeks after giving birth to him...it is super frustrating.

    Good luck.

  • I put on 42lbs while I was pregnant (which was about 30% of my original body weight).  It took several months to take the bulk of it off (I never actively tried to lose weight through exercise or a restricted diet - I breastfed for a year, ate healthy normal food, and am blessed with good genes).  I settled in at about 5-7lbs more than I was before I was pregnant, but I'm shaped differently now - hips are wider, and there's more gut hanging around.  There are pants/skirts that I'll never fit into again, many of my pre-preg shirts were suddenly too short (despite the fact that my chest hasn't changed in size), and my feet never quite went back to original size, so I lost a few cute pairs of shoes.  The weight may eventually come off, but try not to get your hopes up for getting back into all of your pre-preg clothes.  Silver lining: shopping for fun new clothes (note: bright colors make you look more awake than you actually are).
  • I still have weight to lose from DS1.  I gained 15 lbs from having DS2, and that is all gone now, but I was 20 lbs heavier when I got pregnant the 2nd time around, than the first.  I still have 14 lbs to go from Domenic....so, you're not alone. Everyone is different and it will eventually come off.  Don't be so hard on yourself.  As a good friend has told me, you literally just gave birth less than 3 months ago.  Its going to take time.

This post makes me wanna cry.....

Kris - you have to remember, everyone is different. There are folks, like Erin (hehe) who look like they never had children, same for Pam/Pfal.

I was far from skinny when I got pregnant with Ben but I liked my body, and I had a very hard time adjusting to my new post-pg body at first. But now I am ok with it. I'm not thrilled with my weight but I haven't done much to change that (well, it's also hard to do with 2 kids under 3yo!). Now that I'm on track to work to lose the weight I know I can do it.

You need to redefine your body image during and after pregnancy. You don't need to accept being fat - you can always work to get rid of extra pounds - but you need to learn that your new body is a wonderful, amazing thing that was able to grow another life, give birth to that life, and nourish that life if you're breastfeeding. When you think of those things, the stretch marks, the pudge, and the extra inches are just one more thing on the to do list and you just need to work on them.

  • Khris you're in seriously good shape.  You'll spring right back. If you nurse you'll probably end up keeping a few lbs on to keep the milk flowing, this is what happened w/ me for both girls. And Robin I kept about 10lbs on until I weaned C at 14 months. I was fine w/ it because I knew it was the only way I could keep nursing. The whole 9 months on 9 months off thing seems to be true for MANY people. You just have birth to a human!!! You need to cut yourself some slack :)
  • i never lost it all after J and ended up 20lbs heavier when N was conceived than when J was.

    i gained 38 w/ J, but only 6 with N. I'm currently 12lbs down from pre-pg with N and 8lbs UP from pre-pg w/ J.

  • Not alone.

I gained 60 (yes 60) lbs with all 3 children Before Ds2 i was 10 lbs away from my ppw, with DS3 I was 15 lbs away from my PPw from DS1.....It literally took me almost a year each time to get back to that.  Jason is 6 months and I still have 20 lbs to go....I feel your pain.

  • ummm nope. def took me at least 6 months... and even then some things fit weird. and hell, shirts have not been the same on me since before mila thanks to my saggy lopsided boobies.

  • oh god, let's not talk about this! i'm actually under my pre-preg weight, but i look horrible and nothing fits!! my body is so different!  i really shouldn't complain because i haven't done anything except breastfeed!

  • Thanks, Ladies!  Trust me, it is all well worth it and having J means more than some extra pounds but I'm glad it's not just me.  I am trying to be patient and hoping that as the weather gets nicer I can do more about it.
