Types of Pilates?

I'm looking for a night Pilates class for beginners (in Ann Arbor area).  I was googling things and see there are different types of Pilates.  I know there is the mat kind, and ones with machines, and something called TRX?

Does anybody go to Pilates classes? What type do you do and enjoy? Oh, and what do you think is an acceptable price? Per class or package.

Thanks!

Re: Types of Pilates?

  • I mostly do Fusion which is Pilates and Yoga. Love it. But I go in Royal Oak. I have heard great things about the pilates with the machines, but have not tried it yet

  • I don't know a whole lot about pilates, but I had a friend who was training to become a pilates instructor and offered some free lessons.  She trained at the Pilates Loft on Washington, less than a block away from main street.  It was a great studio.  It might be worth checking out.  It seems very personal and great for a first time pilates student.

  • The pilates reformer is an amazing workout. I was SO sore after my session on that a few weeks ago (but in a good way). I think it's about $100 per session to do this with a trainer (one of my bff's is a pilates trainer though, so I don't actually know for sure). I'm doing another session of this on Monday.

I have also gone to a pilates yoga fusion class like Jill, at Lifetime. I really like that too, and it's mat based.

  • $20 seems to be the going rate for 1 group class, and a pack of 5 or so isn't that much of a deal.

I def don't want to do any private sessions.  I'd rather do 5 in the group for the same price :)

  • I go to One on One Athletic Club in Ann Arbor, and they offer drop-in group classes.  Pilates is offered Wednesday nights from 7:30 - 8 for $5 per class.  I've never tried that particular class, but it might be a good introduction to it.

I took a class called Lifted at my gym that is a Pilates/Ballet fusion class that I really enjoyed (and I am by NO means anything close to a ballet person).  That one is an hour long class that is offered several days a week.  I really enjoyed that one... it wasn't too strenuous, but I could definitely feel it the next day.

  • TRX uses bands suspended from the ceiling and is more acrobatic. Stott Pilates is my favorite and seems to be a little more of the mainstream- but also requires a lot of certification in order to teach it. (This is a good thing! Pilates can incorporate movements that, if not taught correctly, can cause a lot of back/neck problems.) There's a guy in Rochester that made up his own style- McEntire pilates- it's a crock.

  • I've done mat pilates and reformer pilates.  I loved the reformer pilates but it does cost more money than a regular mat pilates class.
  • There are some beginner pilates classes offered through MHealthy (just google MHealthy and you should be able to look at the class schedule).  I'm pretty sure anyone can sign up, they just offer a discounted rate to UofM employees.
