need help with Ocean City info

Hi there, DC nestie here looking for info...

DH and I are looking at going to OCMD in July for a long weekend, but neither of us know the area at all.  Just going off maps, it looks like there's a place called Jolly Roger amusement park - is that a good area for families?

I was just wondering if there are certain areas we should avoid (college partiers, etc) since we will have our LO with us (he will be 1.5 this summer).  We plan on spending lots of time on the beach if the weather cooperates.  Is there an area that's particularly family friendly?

TIA!

Re: need help with Ocean City info

  • I think that the higher streets are the most family friendly. The closer you get to the boardwalk, the rowdier it gets, normally. Although there are family friendly places everywhere in OC. I really prefer the Delaware beaches to the OC area. So, Bethany, Fenwick, Dewey, Rehoboth. I think they are much nicer/quieter. We always stay at my SIL's place in Fenwick, and use the Fenwick State Beach because it has nice bathrooms, and concessions all right there, and none of the OC beaches have that, so unless you actually rent some place right on the beach, finding bathrooms can be a challenge.

I haven't been to Jolly Roger in like a million years, but there are tons of rides, and amusements there, so I would think early evening would be fine with a toddler. Hopefully someone else will have better advice there.

Walking the boardwalk early evening will be fine. And I would definitely head up to Rehoboth to check out their main street and boardwalk. It's lovely, with lots of shops and restaurants, and I think lends itself to being more family friendly (and def. more enjoyable) than OC's.

I don't have kids so, I don't have to much advice in that department. I would say the biggest things are to do things early evening (which I am sure you planned on anyway) since the rowdies and drunks tend to be out late. And to be prepared for traffic. It can take an hour to get down to the boardwalk from Northern OC in the peak of summer.

Check out the Calender of Events for when you will be there. I know they do movies in the park, and there are always things going on.

  • Jolly Roger's is amazing...as far as LO goes, I'm not sure as my family mainly focuses on the water park attractions but I do know that they have go-karts and a small amusement park. All in all- it's pretty fun, especially if you go early in the season when it's less crowded! OC is pretty child friendly as far as I'm concerned...A portion of my family lives there year round and my grandparents own a place in Rehoboth so we spend a great deal of time in OC. They have a lot of family attractions (fairs, festivals, kiddie rides at boardwalk) and the food is fantastic.

P.S. I recommend the crabs at On the Bay Seafood...my cousin works there and the seafood is superior!

  • As a kid (from PA), we always went to Rehobeth/Dewey because it was more family friendly. We've been there for day trips and really liked it. I haven't been to OC in years, but when I was younger, I always got the impression it was a party/college kids kind of place...

  • We used to go there almost every summer growing up. My tips would be stay as far north as you can-you probably do not want to stay near the boardwalk, too rowdy. Also I avoid the whole month of June because of high school kids. But I think you said July so you should be fine. We did go for 4th of July weekend one year and it was miserable....so much traffic you couldn't even drive up and down Coastal Highway.

It would be fun to take your LO down to the boardwalk one evening to walk around. I can't remember much about Jolly Roger, but I would think its pretty family friendly.

  • Ditto pp's on staying higher up! I wouldn't stay anywhere under 60th, way too much traffic and too crowded on the beached and in stores/restaurants. Jokky Rodger would be great for your LO! Also, a day trip to the boardwalk would me fun, they have a little area of kid rides and games but I would go before 4pm. I would stay somewhere where there are mostly low rises on that block so the beaches won't be too crowded.
  • thanks for the help, everyone!  I will definitely consider all these things :)
