mini-AW: using up my Groupons, Living Socials, and Eversave deals

like many of us, I bought -- literally -- into the hype of a deal offered on these sites and now find myself sitting on more than a few. I have to go to New Orleans for a week (work convention), May 8-15, so between now and then, I am using my deals for a facial and a massage (but I'll have to pay full price - the horrors! -- for a mani/pedi). Tonight's dinner is a LS deal, too. And I have the Let's Dish deals in my freezer to feed my fam damnily while I'm gone.

I'm interested to see how others of you have fared with the plethora of deals offered these days -- how do you decide what to buy? what to pass up?

(I probably bought more than I really NEEDED, but now I find myself being way more discerning in reading the details, locations, etc., to ensure I can really make use of the offer.)

Re: mini-AW: using up my Groupons, Living Socials, and Eversave deals

  • Go you! Sounds like a good week, to me.

I was just thinking about this the other day. We have wayyyy too many outstanding coupons. These are the ones I can think of:

-a hot yoga coupon that either is expired or has 2 sessions left

-$20 for a wine store near DH's work (how have we not used this yet??)

-Red Hot and Blue in Annapolis

-a Canvas on Demand photo thingy

-15 yoga sessions for a place in U Street. It was only $15!!!

-I still have half a gift card for Red Velvet (again, how have I not used that??)

-a local winery for tasting and a bottle

Jeez, the only coupon we've used in full was one for photos we did last year.  Evidently, we are the reason Groupon/Living Social makes money - we never actually redeem anything.

  • I only buy the ones that are for stuff we need or already do or places we already eat at.. that type of thing.

I bought one of the flying lesson ones for DH for Christmas (which is not something he normally does, but he wants to get back into flying so I said what the heck - for $67 why not).  But I think i've only bought like 2 others and I think they were for the Newseum and the amazon gift card one.

  • we've used most of ours because we usually only get them for restaurants/activities that we already like or want to go to. because of my election cycle hours last fall, i had to miss out on a winery tour. that was definitely a bummer but for the most part, we've used them.

We're somewhat similar. If it's a new place, I'll typically research them and if it's something we want to try, we'll go for it (bar in a neighborhood we've never been to, etc). I try to be very judicious.

Also, I've found that by waiting, I usually forget about them. Which sometimes sucks...I've missed great Groupons for places we go to all the time, just b/c I forget. But we do avoid having way more than we can keep track of/need.

    Vacation
  • I have two outstanding coupons - fandango tickets and blockbuster express rentals.  The expiration on the movie tickets is in June so we will use those soon the blockbuster rentals are good until 2013 and we can go through express box rentals pretty quickly.

I generally only buy the coupons that I "know" we will use.  It has to be close to home and something we do relatively frequently or these days it won't get used.

  • sounds like we're all pretty much in the same boat -- when these deals first came out, it was so easy to click and buy bc the deals were so good! and it was new! and fun!

and then the first CC statement came in and I was ... taken aback.

    so now we're sitting on:

    1. two for oil changes (but there are four vehicles in my family, so we can/will use these)
    2. Market Street Bar & Grill -- a nice place in Reston, near home, John and I will use this in the summer when we don't want to cook (we've been there before and like it)
    3. Lot26 - wall vinyls -- will probably buy holiday decor bc I'm not a wall decal person (can't think of a saying I'd want to look at every day....)
    4. Fandango tickets - like the pp -- this was a good deal and I like movies so win.
    5. Mad Fox Brewing Company - my SIL lives in FC, so John and I can meet here there to use this one.
    6. Lindy's Red Lion - will use with work folks for a fun lunch one day -- we're always trying to find new places, esp in the summer...

I have one for Finnegan's in Herndon and this is sad -- I think I've used it but I am not sure. That's when you know you have too many.

I have one for Eggspectation bc everyone raves about it for brunch -- but I messed up and didn't read the deetz and it's only for dinner. And they don't serve alcohol so... not sure this one will get used at all. (Anyone wanna buy?)

and the aforementioned facial and massage ones.

    See what I mean -- I have a problem!

  • I had trouble buying too many for a while, so now I only buy them if they're deals for places I already go to on a regular basis. I may take more of a risk on a $5 Groupon, but I'm really conservative if they cost $25+.
AlternaTickers - Cool, free Web tickers
  • I'm slowly starting to use the ones that I have.  Here's what's left:

2 more for $8 large Dominoes Pizza - this expires end of May

1 for Johnny Rockets in Kingstowne - I think this expires next week?

1 for fandango movie tickets - expires???

I have 5 more laser hair removal sessions left but I've already started

  • I've bought them for things I've wanted to do but didn't want to pay full price for (ie going to watch polo or super fancy chocolate cakes etc). Otherwise, I've used up ones for things like Amazon and I used one for like a 5k race (which turned out not so good because way too many people bought that).

    I still need to use:

this season's polo tickets- expire in june

    fandango- expires june

    a local restaurant- expires july

I also try to put down the expiration date for things on my google calendar so I can see when something is coming due and then I'll use it up.

  • I have:

-Grill Refill from Propane Taxi (we haven't run out of propane yet, but we've been grilling a lot so by the end of July we'll use it)

-2 $50 to G Street Fabrics (I am still graphing out blocks for my next quilt, but these will get used for sure)

-3 Mr. Wash Car Washes (bought these last time and used them, so I did it again)

I also bought the Fandango and Amazon tickets but we used those right away.

I've bought a couple of the food ones, but sometimes they're not so great.  I had a particularly bad experience at Dangerously Delicious Pies where they were out of almost all of the flavors, and we went like, an hour after they opened one day.

  • i'm seriously such a nerd that i put them all in a spreadsheet with the expiration dates so that i could keep them all straight. the only one i didn't get to use was the newseum and i'm still so sad that i didn't make it there!

and...i just bought another one today! (the kayak tour on LS). personally i love these! i use it mostly to try new places and stuff, and i love it for that reason.

  • I still have ones for:

    1) Blockbuster

    2) Domino's

    3) A mani-pedi at some salon in Old Town (I forget the name now...)

    4) I also have a deal for 2 months worth of Jazzercise classes that I bought from another site.
