Mother's Day close call

My dad and stepmom got married when I was already out of the house, and while I've always liked her (and how happy she's made my dad) we've not really been that close.

I decided to get my stepmom something more than the usual card this year, but she's super hard to shop for, so I asked my dad for some advice. I asked if she liked to get pedicures etc., and he said he thought she would like that. I asked if there was a certain salon/spa she likes to go to, and he wasn't sure. He told me about one he knows she is aware of (called the Rockefeller Center), and told me to check it out and see if they have gift certificates.

I was almost tempted to tell my dad to just go get her a gift certificate for me and I would pay him for it, but I decided to do a little research, and I googled it this morning. Good thing I did. The full name is not the Rockefeller Center Salon and Day Spa, or anything I would expect.

It's the Rockefeller Center for Anti-Aging.

I think if I got my stepmom a gift certificate for the anti-aging center, she would not take it well (nor would I, if things were reversed). Back to the drawing board I go...

  • Oh dear.  Narrow miss!  Think he heard an ad on the radio or something?

I have shopped for my step mom and half for my mom (she's probably getting nothing else), but nothing for my MIL.  Has anyone seen anything  covered in rhinestones lately?

You could get a Bedazzler and bedazzle something for her. ;)

And is it common to get your MIL something on Mother's Day?  I haven't in the past and wasn't planning on it.  She's not MY mother.  I leave it up to H to get her something, and then I get my own mom something.  Is that b!tchy?  (Even so, I still probably won't get her anything, she drives me insane.)

My H will buy her a card and nothing else.  The card will only say "Happy Mother's Day" and then he won't even send it on time.  The gifting has improved significantly since I have been in his life.  I screen and purchase presents, as well as mailing them in time to get there.

Mary- that made me laugh water through my nose for no particular reason!

Tara- I dont worry about my MIL and I like her. I take care of both my mom and my step mom and Jay takes care of his mom; whatever is purchased/given is from both of us. She's not my mom, I have two of my own to deal with!

  • My MIL's birthday is the 10th, so we always do a combo gift. We help pick out each others' mom gifts.

  • We usually go in on a gift for Josh's mom with his sisters. If not, then usually I end up picking something out from the two of us. I also buy all cards for all holidays/birthdays and mail them out....like Mary. Otherwise, no one would get anything! :)

  • We got my mom and MIL massage gift certificates from groupon!
