Job Advice

I know Heather already saw this on FB....but I'd love some job advice.

My company is growing and changing, and with that, they're creating some new positions and changing some old ones.  There are two positions currently open in my department.  One is the position of Instructional Supervisor, which is basically the supervisor of the entire English department (which is currently somewhere around 98 teachers).  The other is a new position, which is essentially the assistant to the IS, along with a little bit of actual teaching.  I've already put my name in for consideration for this new position.

When the Instructional Supervisor originally came open back in December (the former IS got promoted), I turned it down.  I didn't want to have to process payroll on Saturday evenings, and I didn't want to have to deal with customer complaints.  Those were my big issues with the job.  So they found someone else, but she recently took a much better paying position elsewhere.  So...my former IS called me yesterday, and asked me to consider taking the IS position.  I would be working directly for her again, and she said that the job has changed a bit.  I won't be processing payroll (that job is going back to her), and there is a new position being created that will handle customer complaints.  My job would really be supervising the teachers, working with curriculum development, creating and running professional development...that kind of thing.

I'm tempted to take it and try something new.  But I've never held a supervisory position of any kind, and it would be a lot more responsibility.  That's scary.  :)  The pay would be better, but not really by a whole lot.  And what if I hate it?  I'm not sure I'd be able to say, "Never mind...please make me a teacher again and find someone else to be the supervisor."

What do you think, ladies?

Re: Job Advice

  • As one of your friends mentioned and I didn't even think about it but would you be able to do this, grad school and still have somewhat of a life?

I think you would be good at it because you always seem to know the right thing to say and I think you are a great teacher and would be good fit for the job. I think you would make a good supervisor as you know how to make peopel feel good and tell people what they need to hear, but in a way that doesn't make them feel like dirt(hope that made sense). To me you also respect people and treat people fairly and to me that is a big thing for me in a supervisor.

Is there anyway that there could be a probation period and if you did decide that after, say 60 days, if you didn't think you would be a good fit that you could go back to teaching?

  • wow that is a tough call. Do you know how much more work would be required of you?

  • I'm with Carmen, I would need to see exactly how much more responsibility it entails.

I will give you my experience. I took a supervisor job at my last company and I honestly hated it. I realized that I didn't want to be a supervisor. I didn't want to deal with the employees problems, and all that went with it. It is just not for me. I don't mind having additional responsibilities just not manging people.  Now if you think you would want to manage people, it might be a good opportunity for you. But I would really think about if that is what you would like. Like you said, you probably won't be able to say "nah, this really isnt for me, can I have my old job back"

I ended up leaving the company (I didnt want to be there anyways - long commute and other issues) but there was not another position for me if I did want to stay. So within a few months of taking on the supervisor job, I was already looking for something else.

I would talk to them about what the position entails, what a normal day would look like, how much more responsibility you would have, would there be a requirement to work more hours/days. etc. And then based on the info of the job, see if you think that would be a good fit for you and your lifestyle.
