br: ears and teething (I know, I know)

Sorry, I realize this is SUCH a common question but I need some input.

LJ is  getting his top teeth (sooo close to coming through) and he seems to be struggling.  He has been pulling at his ear a bit the past few days but nothing outrageous and he hasn't been overly fussy.  However, my daycare gal today said he was doing it more...

Ear infection?  Fluid?  Just pain?  Par for the course?

We popped the bottom two teeth pretty easily so I'm not sure how to react to these.

Any thoughts?

I do realize none of you are doctors, but I hate to rush a babe in when it's just something that has to run it's course. Just looking for 'your experience'.

Re: br: ears and teething (I know, I know)

  • If he isn't overly fussy I wouldn't worry about it. For my girls the cues for an ear infection were a terrible nights sleep and a slight fever. He might have some fluid but if it isn't infected it will likely just resolve itself.

If he doesn't really seem uncomfortable though he should be okay. I would just let him chew on some good teethers and hope those teeth pop through soon. That is just Dr.Lacey's opinion though. ; )

  • For Reagan this always meant infection. I realize it's different for each child though- I would call for peace of mind. GL!

  • The top teeth are bigger so could cause more pain.  Is his sleep affected?  C has been pulling on her ears as well.  She is working on molars.  I am just going with it right now.  She is sleeping fine - so far.

  • Sophia only ever pulled on her ears during teething, never with an ear infection.  Our only sign for an ear infection, unfortunately, was vomiting.  I would say unless he is super fussy or not sleeping at night it's probably teeth.  If it continues for several days I might have him checked just to make sure.

  • Can you lay him down on his back without him fussing a lot?  If he is fussing when you lay him down, does he calm down if you talk to him etc.?

Both of my girls had very similar symptoms when teething to an ear infection.  Our pedi told me the best way to know the difference is whether they would tolerate laying on their backs.  If it was just teething, I could settle them down, but if it was ear infection, they would not be happy until they were more upright and the pressure was off their ears.

    Good Luck!

  • If AJ had these symptoms, it would almost certainly be an ear infection.

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
  • He is sleeping fine (in fact, this week was the first time he STTN... omg, I know).  So perhaps that just means teeth?

Ahh it's so hard!  I just wish he could tell me :)
