DH unemployed and end of the school year

My DH has been unemployed for just over 7 months and throughout this time I have gone through a variety of emotions. We are very fortunate to have unemployment benefits because he was making more money than me and I moved into his place after we were married. I had just started grad school four months before he was let go and find myself stressed becasue of my full time job as a special education teacher and being a grad student.

He hasn't had a lot of luck finding work in the area that we live and is looking at areas about an hour or so outside of where we live. My concern is that he finds a job in an area outside our hometown and I have to resign from mine. I am worried about having to compete for teaching positions now and leave my grad program. Any suggestions?

Re: DH unemployed and end of the school year

  • If he's only looking at places an hour or so from where you live, can he just commute? If he doesn't want to commute that far and you want to relocate, why not relocate to a place halfway between the two places, so you're both commuting 30 minutes or so? That seems pretty standard to me. For school, you could look into more online courses, if possible, to cut down on time away from home.

  • Is he looking outside of his field? DH was unemployed for 7 months and was able to find something, off of craigslist of all places. He has a certificate for airplane maintenance, was laid off from the airport after a merger. He now reads gas meters for our local gas company. Completely out of his field, and less money, but he is no longer unemployed.

  • Agree with Jkip. FI was unable to find a job after he got out of the Marines and collected unemployment. A few months ago he took a job at a local auto parts store. He's not making nearly as much as he was before, but it's a job.
