More PWing: Found a flea

We just found a flea in our house. We don't have any pets and that's the only one we've seen. Do we need to do anything or should we wait to see if we see any more before doing anything? If we do need to do something, what do we need to do?

 TIA!

  • I would just wait. If you're really paranoid, you could sprinkle the floor with Borax, leave overnight, then vacuum it up. That dessicates the living fleas as well as the eggs, and it's nontoxic.

This is what I have heard is a great method.  If you have carpet you can sprinkle it on and brush it into the fibers with a broom and let it set for a few days and then vacuum. I know my parents used borax and it worked after my sisters dogs left fleas in their house.

  • I'm pretty sure borax IS toxic if ingested repeatedly.. It's not recommended for use around animals or small children if I remember correctly. It's fine for adults bec you're probably not licking the carpet.. but if you had a baby crawling around the rugs, or putting stuff in their mouths that had been on the rugs... I've stayed away from it for that reason (bostons are super sensitive since short nose = zero toxin filtration) and never even looked at labels. So it may be a small risk -- but I'd doublecheck packaging.

  • And to actually answer the question... I probably wouldn't worry about it. Flea season is off to a serious bang this year -- I know a few people who are having to treat their pets every 2 weeks because it's so bad. So it's likely that you just had one hitch-hike it's way inside.

FWIW, I use this stuff every 6 months, and I love it. I hadn't done mine at the first of the year and I'm convinced that's why I ended up with a palmetto bug in my kitchen...  probably entirely untrue, but whatever. lol

  • I wouldn't worry about 1 flea. When you see a few more, get the treatment Jen suggested.

  • Thanks! I won't worry about it for now and will do the treatments you guys suggested if I see more.
