Refrigerator Types - Pros and Cons

We have to buy a fridge, and DH and I disagree about what type to buy. I want a bottom freezer, preferably french doors but will settle for the regular doors. He thinks we should get a side by side and then buy a small freezer for the garage. So, can I get some pros and cons please? What do you love/hate about your fridge? What would you do differently if you bought a new one?

Types we're considering:

Bottom freezer - french doors without dispenser/with external dispenser if we find a deal/with internal dispenser

Bottom freezer - regular door

Side by side - with dispenser

Re: Refrigerator Types - Pros and Cons

  • We have a side by side with an external ice/water dispenser. I don't use my freezer that much, so having another smaller one would make no difference, I actually wish I had more refrigerator space. I've noticed when we have parties or entertain and I've made lots of appetizers and put them on sheet pans, they don't always fit in the fridge, or multiple large bowls of cookie dough when it's holiday baking time don't always fit... so I'd probably prefer the fridge only top with french doors to fit everything in better.

I think the only downside to a bottom only freezer is I like having lots of shelves to keep everything separate... but like I said, we don't utilize the freezer much.

  • I have a side by side & I feel like my freezer is constantly FULL. I wish I had a bottom freezer to fit more.

  • I'm with CD.  I feel like there is no freezer room in my side by side.  It seems to fill up too easily, and I can't fit a frozen pizza in it.  Freezer fail.  I plan on getting a new fridge/freezer before the baby is born and keep our current one in the pantry as a backup.
  • We have a french door bottom freezer in the kitchen.  I love it except that I wish the bottom part opened wider than it does.  Sometimes it is hard to see what is in there but it holds a lot of stuff.

We also have a side by side out in the garage. We use that for additional freezer space and the fridge part hold all of our soda, beer, water.  We also have a fairly large deep freezer chest but that is mainly for us to have somewhere to put all the venison DH gets during hunting season.  I think this past season we had over 200 lbs of venison and the freezer still had room for me to put additional stuff in there.

  • We have a side by side with dispenser in the house and another side by side in the garage.  It works for us, but I've never had a bottom freezer type to compare.  We use the dispenser a lot for water and ice.  We also definitely utilize the garage fridge/freezer quite a bit.  The fridge part mainly for holding drinks and extras for parties, both our freezers always seem to be full as we buy good quantities of meat when they're on sale.
  • We have a pretty narrow side by side.  I wish we had more room in both the freezer and the refrigerator.  The downside I see to a bottom freezer is that you have to stack everything in it and there aren't shelves to make it easy to see what you have.

My BFF has a freezer on bottom model in her kitchen with no dispenser.  She also just got a full size freezer and a full size fridge to put in her laundry room.  Next to each other, they make a GIANT side by side.  (No jealousy here ...)

  • We have a tradional freezer on top fridge on bottom, it was free with the house so no complaints. We had a small chest freezer out in the garage but everytime the power went off the freezer wouldn't come back on. We lost a lot of food that way.

  • We have the traditional freezer on top fridge on the bottom. I like it ok but feel like we never have enough room in the freezer. In college we had a side by side and I hated it. No space in either the fridge or freezer.

My parents have a side by side in their St Augustine house and it is up against a wall so the freezer door doesn't open all the way. Never annoying and poor planning on the builders part. They just remodeled their house in MD and have a freezer on bottom fridge on the top and I absolutley LOVE it. If we ever upgrade our klitchen or move this is what I want.

  • Thanks for the input! The pros and cons you've all mentioned are in line with my thought process. I have a feeling I'm going to win this battle. Wink

  • We used to have a freezer drawer on the bottom, and I HATED it. I do frozen veggies a lot, and it was so freaking impossible to see what was in there or to get to things.

     This is exactly our situation.

I've never had a freezer on bottom, so I'm wondering, does it actually give you more space? Does that mean you have less space in the fridge? I do like how the side by side has so many shelves so I can try to keep organized and see what I have.

My DH thinks we should buy a chest freezer in addition to what we already have, since we're running out room. But, he's the type to keep leftover ice after a party, and throw entire limbs from the banana tree in there. When he goes fishing, he also likes to freeze the filets in bags full of water/ice, so they end up taking up a lot more room than just a piece of frozen fish. His coworker told him it prevents freezer burn, I have no idea if that's true or not. Anyway, I told him to organize all that stuff and throw out the ice, then maybe we'll talk about it again.

  • We have a freezer on the bottom with only water dispenser on the outside. Ice maker in the freezer but we have to open it up to get it. I love my fridge! The french doors make it so easy to fit things. Not having the dispenser also saves a ton of door/storage room. I don't mind opening the freezer to get ice as long as I have cold water on demand.

Our freezer has 3 trays that pull out so I can easily see what is in each. I do wish they pulled out about 2-3 more inches but really, it is great.

However, I will never buy stainless again! For us, it is such a pain to keep finger prints/yucky peanut butter hands etc off. Maybe once Nathan isn't a toddler it won't be so bad but if it weren't brand new, I would get a black one.

  • I'm late, but ours has french doors on top with built in water/ice dispenser and the freezer drawer on the bottom.  I love the refrigerator part, but the freezer annoys me because everything seems to just get tossed in there and I have to dig through it to find stuff.  It holds a TON though.

We have our old side by side out in the garage now, it's the beer/soda/wine fridge :)
