Alaska...Anyone ever been?

If yes, what did you do there? DH and I leave in 3 weeks to visit his brother and sister in law. They live in Anchorage but we plan to try and get out as much as possible (DH's brother is a bush pilot). Anyway they keep asking us if there is anything specific we want to do or see, and I have no clue...any ideas??

  • I went once, around 7 or 8 years ago, it was breathtaking!  I spent most of the time in Anchorage since I was there to keep my sister company as she did the Anchorage marathon.  We did go down to Seward for a few days. It's a cute little town, not much to do but worth it just for the ride from Anchorage to Seward - holy scenery batman.  I remember we did some wildlife boat ride that was pretty cool (saw eagles), saw some icebergs, went hiking etc. Our activities were a bit limited since my sister was preserving her energy for the marathon. We were there during the summer solstice and it was really neat to be walking around at 1 am and have it still be light out.

Just make sure you bring some heavy/winter stuff. I remember having to buy a fleece and a rain jacket because it didn't dawn on me that it would be much colder in higher elevations or when going to see icebergs; and it rains there a lot.

I want to go back there since we didn't have time to see Denali (I forget why our trip wasn't longer... I think money was tight then for one of us).  There are a lot of nice areas north of Anchorage that look like they'd be worth a visit.

  • I will definitely take LOTS of pictures!! I'm pretty excited to see an ice berg, I know when my in laws went they took them there. My sister in law already warned me about the rain, but she says she hopes the weather will be nice, we're going right around when it starts to get a little nicer in the days...so hopefully we get some good weather!!

  • Fun!  I've never been but my cousin's wife stayed there for a summer.  She is more the outdoorsy type so I know they did a lot of fishing.  Not sure if they have it now or not but maybe check into seeing some of the northern lights.

  • I have never been, but Jeff's cousin lives up there and is an interior decorator. So, when his uncle went up to see her, I know they did some fly-in fishing and glacier tours! Have fun!!!
